Although there has been very little comment about it in the media, today officially marks a momentual evolution for Irish Film in Ireland. Well actually its been like this for some years now but its finally "officially recognised".

IFCO is now offically known as the Irish Film Certification Office as opposed to the Irish Film Censor Office.

By official i assume its just an updating of legal company paperwork, as Mr John Kelleher and his predecessor Mr Seamus Smith had moved away from the whole censorship angle anyway.

Kelleher has also made changes to the cost of smaller distributors releasing films in Ireland, hence why we have seen an increase in the availability of arthouse and foreign film in Ireland.

Any way he can force cinemas to show some of them? I love foreign movies, but the 2 local cinemas here stick with 'safe' Hollywood movies.

Nope. He just gets them certified - it's not up to him what the cinemas show. You need to educate the locals into viewing something a bit different and then maybe the cinemas will realise there's a market for arthouse/foreign films.

It was kind of a rhetorical question, ixoy... I already knew the answer. :)

So what do I do? During big hollywood blockbusters, stand outside with a placard that says "Down with this sort of thing" ??

I heard him on 2FM news this morning saying that there won't be any cuts made to The Dark Knight and that because "It's a very dark movie" he gave it a 15A.

 Since when has that been news?

I never liked the word "Censor" in the IFCO name. Just reminded me of stern ol' Ireland chopping up and banning movies. (Reservoir Dogs, anyone?)

Sure Gone with the Wind and The Quiet Man were cut by Irish censors at the time!

Don't forget Evil Dead was only unbanned 3 years ago too

Here's the infamous list, though a few movies aren't mentioned here:

1931: Monkey Business was banned because censors feared it would encourage anarchic tendencies.
1967: Ulysses, based on the book by James Joyce - unbanned September 2000.
1968: Rocky Road to Dublin (documentary which in part questioned Irish censorship) - unbanned in 2003.
    1971: A Clockwork Orange - unbanned in 2000.
1979: Monty Python's The Life of Brian - unbanned in 1987.
1983: Monty Python's The Meaning of Life - unbanned in 1990.
    1984: Cannibal Holocaust - unbanned in 2006.
1989: Meet The Feebles - still banned as of 2007.
    1991: Riki-Oh - unbanned in 2002.
1994: Natural Born Killers - unbanned.
1996: From Dusk Till Dawn - unbanned in 2000.
    1999: Romance - still banned.
2000: Baise Moi - still banned.
