Convert VHS to digital format?

I have an old VHS tape I want to convert to a digital format(MPEG or AVI) and I'm not sure if I have the right equipment needed? I can watch films from my laptop on my TV which is connected with a SCART Adapter(S-Video Composite & Audio). There is a switch on the scart adapter which can be changed to 'Out' so I'm thinking if I did that and then got some sort of capture software for my laptop then that would do the trick? Has anyone done this before, if so am I on the right track?

You're going to need a video input on your laptop. Easiest way would probably be to get a external TV card, hook up the VCR to that and record the stream.

Will the s-video port not take video input or is it for output only?
I do have a TV card in my main PC so I suppose I could just set up the VCR beside it?
Any suggestion on software to use?

AFAIK, the s-video port on a laptop is output only.

Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas tend to be the main programs for high end video ripping but they're quite pricey unless you have a student discount or similar.

if you have a dvd recorder, hook the vhs up to it and copy the vhs to dvd then rip the dvd to an avi

You could get a usb capture solution:

Something like that fella there. Ensure you have USB2.0 though.
For DVD, the peak bitrate is around 10Mbit/s

Just if anyones interested I got this to work in the end. I connected my VCR player to my PC with a SCART to s-video adapter and then I got the input using the software which came with my Hauppauge PVR-150 tv card. Finally I used Windows movie maker to edit the video file :D
