Budget Auto Focus Lens for D40

Im considering this for my D40. Does anyone have one of these lenses or can anyone recommend something similar at a price close enough to this? I know its cheap and im not looking for spectacular results, but are lenses this cheap good for anything?

I'd prefer not to get people recommending other 55-200 lenses for €3,000 etc.. I was in a certain camera shop last week, looking for a fisheye adaptor to put on the kit lens (oldschool i know, but its for taking the odd architectural interior photo, maybe 1 a month) and the guy was trying to sell me a 12-24 lens for €500 odd. I just cant justify spending that much as its not that often id be using it. As I said, im not looking for incredible results and its a lens i would not be using all the time. So would this be worth it?

    Thanks.

well what do you want the lens to do exactly, no point in buying one for the sake is there?

Mainly architectural photography with work, and some aircraft photography

For architectural stuff your going to need a lens that is reliably sharp throughout its range i would guess, and possibly something a bit wider than 55mm?

My advice would be to read as many reviews as you can before buying any lens, especially if your using it for work purposes because obviously the better the photograph the more useful it is in your professional capacity.

Not being a Nikon user thats the best i can offer unfortunately.

i'll be using the 18-55 lens along with this. Also, when you refer to needing a sharper lens, its not for photos for clients, but for reference photos

does the new version suffer from chromatic abrasion as bad as the d50 kit one, its actually horredous how bad it is

I too have a Nikon, mine is a D80 purchased early this year.

The lens delivered with my Nikon was a Nikon 18-135mm, so I looked for a second lens to expand the zoom coverage specially for those outdoor holiday pics.

I ended up with a Sigma APO DG 70-300mm 1:4-5.6, and are very happy it.
The autofocus works well with my D80 and it gives me great pics. The fact that it costed a fraction of what a similar Nikon lens would have costed was a big point when I made my choise. (The Sigma lens set me back €180 in a shop off Grafton Street in Dublin.)

Nikkor 55-200mm vr - great lens (all of my telephoto photos were taken with it).

Quite cheap too - I got it for 230 euro in China 1.5 years ago, the price ought to have come down now...

As your requirements are for reference, the Sigma or Tokina lenses are perfect for what you need. If clients were going to see the pics or if you were going to blow them up larger than 10x12, then I'd say yes, invest in the Nikon. But otherwise, the others are great lenses. Use a lower ASA, slower shutter speed and a tripod. Hope this helps.
