Should I buy a Hugo Boss Suit €600?

    Hi there,

I am starting my own business and need a sharp, good quality suit for meeting with potential clients, suppliers etc.... I would also like to be able to use it for formal social events.

Problem is I don't really know what the good suit brands are and am feeling a bit lost, my budget is €500 - €600.

I was in Hugo Boss in Dundrum and tried on a few suits, one of them seemed to fit really well and looked good but was €600 in the sale which seems a bit over priced to me.

Also I've heard that HB suits don't hold there shape very well.

I was thinking of looking at Armani suits but not sure if they would be much better?

Just wondering if anyone can give me any pointers?

I'd suggest taking a look at one of the Louis Copeland shops. A very good range of prices, brands and styles as well as very no-nonsense staff.

Em, I thnk you'll need more than one!

+1 for Louis Copeland - 80% of a good suit is in the tailoring.

Forget about brands buy a suit that fits you well and looks well - at the end of the day no-one can tell what brand a suit is - ok don't go to Tescos :D but there are plenty of good mid range suits out there to give overpriced rubbish like Hugo Boss a run for their money

Dropped E500 on a Tommy Hilfiger suit and delighted with it.
If the suit suits you, go for it bro.

    True, very true.
It might be worth trying Arnotts as they have a sale on at the moment, but for quailty Mr Copeland is the Chuck Norris of the suit world. (not sure if thats good or bad.

No, in short. Hugo Boss built his company on nazi gold. Boss designed black uniforms for Heinrich Himmler's SS, to replace the SA brown shirts. He also designed the Hitler Youth uniforms.

    Nazi gold? ZOMG!

A lot of German companies worked in Germany / for the German government during Hitlers reign. He was the leader of Germany, you know.

I said nothing about Hitler. Hugo Boss also used unpaid prisoners of war in the preduction of their suits.

You mentioned the Nazis and the SS, which are fairly synonymous with Hitlers reign as leader of Germany.

Are you really using this as a reason not to buy anything made buy them now?

He didn't design the SS uniforms btw ;)

Really? Who did? As here.from.day.1 will attest to his wikipedia page states he did. Although I'm fully willing to admit thats not an infallible source.

    Wow a thread has gone off-topic! There's a surprise :D

OP, as others have said, get a suit that looks good on you regardless of the brand name.

If you can afford to do so get a suit tailored to your measurements. Find a good tailor, get a quote, ask for advice from them on material to buy according to your budget and go from there :)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS
The all-black SS uniform was designed by SS-Oberführer Prof. Karl Diebitsch and Walter Heck (graphic designer) and made by Hugo Boss

    Hi All,

Thanks for the tips, some interesting points there :-)

I like the fit of the HB suit, seems just right off the peg (as far as I can tell) but it is right at the top end of my budget at 600 notes....for that kind of money I am more worried about the quality of Hugo Boss suits and if anyone has any experience of how well they hold there shape, deal with wear and tear compared to other suits.

Some other posts on boards.ie slate HB's suit quality so just wondering if any one has any experience of ownership?

    Thanks a million guys!!!

Pretty sharp duds if you can get over the ethical dilemma, in fairness....

I have a number of Hugo Boss suits (pick them up for $399 when I visit the US) and I'm very happy with them. I find they hold their shape well and look smart.

Then again, I'm hardly comparing them with top of the range Italian stuff, but rather with suits in the $150-$250 range (Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Hilfigger, Kenneth Cole etc). Those who are used to really sploshing the dosh might not be as easily pleased as me. :)

always buy a second pair of trousers for your suit too. they wear faster.
