Type the address he posted into the address bar in either Internet Explorer or in Firefox http://192.168.1.254

This will open a router configuration page. On the top right on the page you will see "Connect" , hit it , wait for 1 minute or so, and you should be automatically connected again.

If all the lights are green on the modem there is no need to contact eircom

Alternatively try to unplug Eircom Modem/Router from the wall socket, then plug back in and watch for all lights to come back on.

Check the DSL sync light on the router. It should be constantly on green (not flashing). Also there should be a light for the internet on that box. It should be green and not red. If both of those are ok then the router has access to the internet.

The next step then is to work out why the computer doesn't.

Post how you get on with the first steps then I will tell you what to do next.

Next thing to do is to check connectivity between your computer and the router.

    Click on this link:
    http://192.168.1.254

It should bring up the router's setup page on your web browser.

If it doesn't we will try another thing.

Do you have zone alarm installed by any chance? Its a firewall which your friend may have installed for you.

Ok if that works then (im presuming you are using windows xp) go to the start menu and click on run.

Then type "cmd" (without the quotes) into the box and press ok.

A black filled window should appear.

Type in this and press enter:

    "ping www.boards.ie" (without the quotes)
if the above works i.e. it says some thing like:
    Reply from 89.234.66.107: bytes=32 time=121ms TTL=55
four times in a row - one after another (the important word "reply")

If the above works then type this into the black filled window:
    "ping 89.234.66.107" (without the quotes)
again you are looking for the something like this:
    Reply from 89.234.66.107: bytes=32 time=121ms TTL=55
    four times in a row

Go to Start, and look at applications for Zone Alarm or alternatively go to 'Start', 'Control Panel', 'Add Remove Programs' and you should see it listed.

    Actually, it's both. :)

    ----

Hiscan, can you go to the command prompt and do an IP Config command?

    Here's how:
    Start>Run
    Type: cmd
In the black window, type: ipconfig /all
Press: ALT-Print Scrn (at the same time)

Now, go into MS Paint and open the Edit menu and hit Paste (or use the shortcut Ctrl-V key combination to paste).

Then you must save the file and attach it to your next post here. Then we can see your screen-shot.
