Schmidt & Bender scope

    Hi folks,

Yep I know it's in hunting, not general shooting, I'll come to that in a minute. I got a Nightforce scope at the moment, I can't fault it. I've got an itch I need to scratch (yes, I did get a cream for it). I need to see a Schmidt & Bender scope along side it, in the dark, under field conditions. Preferably a comparable one though I'm not going to be very fussy about that (mines an NXS 5.5-22x56) I just won't be happy until I do. So, the reason I posted this in hunting is because that's what my gear is all for, so I figure this is the best place for it.

Any possible meet up doesn't need to be very soon, I've pretty much given up shooting for the summer due to short nights, and a lot of work.

Anyone interested? Also possible for you to come here for a nights shooting later in the year or vice versa perhaps.

I've looked through many many scopes but usually outside of a shop, in daylight. Plus I'm never comfortable just holding a scope in my hand, it's not natural! Prefer them to be on a rifle, where they belong.

    ATB,

    John

Ive owned both a schmidt 4-16 x50 precision hunter and a nxs 3.5 -15 x50 both are excellent the schmidt might have the edge when it comes to low light but the difference is tiny and debateable. The schmidt will be noticeably lighter. The one think you schould keep in mind is elevation adjustment. Schmidts (except pm2 you need 34mm mounts for a pm2) have a very small adjustment range in comparison to the nxs. You wont be clicking in ranges up to 600 yards with one. Another thing is that the schmidt will have a thick cross hair perfect for hunting but it will be thicker than the nxs. I would consider the nxs to be a slightly more robust scope. Change to a pm2 or else buy a zeiss. I have a zeiss 6-24 x 56 and it in my opinion is better than any other scope i have ever used including a pm2.

The Schmidt PMII's are availaible in either first or second focal planes. That would alleviate the above problem.

the zeiss has a 30mm tube the schmidt has a 34 mm tube probably will mean far more expensive mounts. The zeiss is lighter its 1.4 oz heavier than a schmidt precision hunter 4-16 x50 remember the zeiss is 6-24 x56 and illuminated! The zeis costs around 1800 the schmidt costs around 2500 euro. John Lambert has one (a zeis) in stock with an elaborate reticle (i use clicks no hold over so i like a simple reticle) he may have a pm2 also for you to compare it to. I dont mean to sound like a know all i dont shoot f class I hunt deer fox and rabbit (long range rabbits) and I love the zeiss and youd bust yourself laughing if you saw what i have it mounted on, a t3 lite in 270 sounds silly! I have to mention that the rifle will group .5 of an inch at 200 yards (3 shot), theres guys out there carrying 9 pound rifles which wouldnt do that. You are welcome to pm me if you want to see the scope yes its overkill for hunting but i wouldnt part with it for the world.

what can i say i was robbed!!! I wish i was more cleverer!

unless you take into account the 80 dollar shipping and handeling (approx) and getting caught with vat also on the way in (they are an american company) oh ya and not being able to trade your old scope (worth 1000 euro second hand) and not having it fitted by a professional and not being able to get into a car and get a replacement within twenty minutes if something happens to it. Oh one more thing the dollar wasnt as strong against the euro at the time of purchase.

I looked at that website and a number of others at the time
fyo WWW.4scopes.com have much better prices on the zeiss conquest
    cheers

And one time at band camp......Sorry Ballistic, didnt mean to get you all fired up. I'm in the market for a decent scope myself. Thanks to you i now know to steer clear of the states. Incidentally, I've never had any problems bringing in mags or spare parts.

wasnt fired up man, i wouldnt rule out the states, money can be saved just be aware of the possible pit falls. mags and spare parts? not sure? but i would be careful, getting caught for vat might be the least of your worries could be off to band camp with you!
