It appears that the new robocop sequel has a director, Darren Aronofsky. The film will be set 20 years after the termination of the robocop program in L.A.

in case you are wondering, Darren Aronofsky wrote and directed Requiem For a Dream and The Fountain.

Wow, wouldn't have put Robocop and Darren Aronofsky together. Should be interesting.

He was also behind Pi, which leads me to hope for a film in which the malfunctioning Murphy, now destitute and homeless after the Robocop Program was shut down, wanders the streets and tries to comprehend the seemingly-unlinked patterns he sees around him in Detroit, ultimately discovering that it's actually just a hardware malfunction due to a blown capacitor in his head....

That is an extremely odd choice. I don't believe Aronofsky has ever really done any action work - his one foray into sci-fi territory was a far more cerebral affair.
Perhaps this is him just wanting to break into the big boys territory, having been stuck in arthouse territory up until now.

Very strange choice. Be interesting to see what he does with it.

There is a part of me wondering if he could turn it into an X-Men 1 affair, with little action and too much drama. I really cant see Robocop working without some kind of Verhoeven streak or sytle of humour to it.

I could be wrong, but one of the reasons i think robocop 1 worked was because right from the word go, you know the film doesnt take itself serious.

The comic series was actually quiet good.I know he's a big comic book fan and has been interested in Robocop for quiet some time now , so I reckon the re boot could be very interesting

hopefully the film would have the right combination of cheese and drama with excessive amounts of ott violence and random explosions. Aronofsky is an interesting choice but the Fountain was terrible, well it was ok from a particular viewpoint and it had a certain artistry about it but it was a bit self indulgent.

If it's the Avatar comic series you're thinking of, I think Frank Miller was involved in it. I got the feeling after reading some interviews with Miller that part of the reason he wanted to do the comic series was because his work on the screenplays for Robocop 2 & 3 were butchered by the studios. Would be interesting to see Miller's ideas and vision tempered through Aronofsky's direction - having seen the teaser trailers floating around for The Spirit, I get the feeling Miller shouldn't have complete control by himself or everything he touches will turn into an over the top stylised knockoff of Sin City....

This is promising news i reckon, Aronofsky is a talented director and whilst he hasn't done "action" yet i'm sure he'll do a great job. I'm a lot happier than i would be if someone like that hack McG had got it anyway, but he's busy further raping the Terminator franchise i guess.

I thought this was going to be a remake, i'm glad they're leaving that alone!
