Hello ,just wondering has anyone ever painted floorboards with emulsion and then clear varnished to protect.
I was going to paint the boards with matt emulsion and stain with matt varnish ,hoping to get a strong colour on the floor. Can it be done ?

    Thanks.

Matt is going to have a tough time adhering to the floorboards...you really ought to use a proper wood primer (oil or water based) which you can have coloured to suit, or paint over with the coloured emulsion later.
Stain with matt varnish? I'm not with you...if you mean just use matt varnish for the top coat then yeah, but best to use oil based matt as the acrylic stuff tends to yellow faster (might not be an issue depending on colour of borads prior to top coat).
What kind of look are you going for here? You're not going to get the "dead" flat look you normally associate with the term "matt" with this method...there will always be an underlying sheen.
