Well depends on what type of effect you want?

Smoky eye, go for a kohl pencil - Dior have a nice one with a smudger on the end.

Or a normal straight line on the eye - go for a waterproff eyeliner like MAC's engraved. This is less likey to smudge.

Or if you want waterproof and more into a dramatic effect, flicks and the like and are willing to practise using a slanted brush, go for a gel liner like MAC or Bobbi Brown. The colours tend to be stronger than the pencils.

Personally with me, it depends on the look I'm after.

Bourjois is created by Chanel! Have a look at the eyeshadows and they are very similar. Difference is the price! ;)

Ok if you're looking for a pencil eyeliner I strongly recommend Gosh or MAC.

As for the gel eyeliners, I have a Bobbi Brown one and its fantastic. I use it on all nights out, it takes a bit of practice but once you get used to it, it's a dream to use. It doesn smudge which most kohl pencils do and as you're applying it with a brush it's more precise and you can play another with different looks.

And oh my god, I didn't realise that Bourjois is created by Chanel! You learn something new everyday!ha

What colour are you looking for? A brown or purple can be very nice for a change.

Get the mac Fluidline with the small angled brush for applying it. There's loads of different colours so you will find something nice. Blacktrack is the name of the black.

I'd go with Mac Fluidline in Blacktrack - or for real staying power get yerself some GOSH liquid liners, lovely colours and never budge :)

If you don't like to wear black, the Macroviolet Mac fluidline is a lovely plum colour. There's a purpley colour -waveline either if you want somethin brighter. There is a silver colour in the range called silverstroke.

MAC MAC MAC! Mac eyeliners are the best. My favourite is the kohl pencil in shade 'teddy'. It's a rich brown with really subtle gold flecks, it suits my eyes much better than black. Think it is around 15 euro.

I love bourjois for coloured kohl pencils too, but I don't rate their coloured liquid liner at all, it's really watery.

Shiseido fine liner is a great marker pen style liquid liner, very easy to use. It's about 30 euro, and you can buy refil cartridges for it.

Bourjois Noir is the best I've used so far. Doesn't wear away as much as the others and gives a nice, dark look. My fave by far. ;)

For day to day black eyeliner I use Chanel Stylo Yeux. It is great for a perfectly defined, black line around the eyes and doesn't wear off easily.
For a smoky look I use Bad Gal eyeliner by Benefit - a massive chunky eyeliner, great for smudging or going for a heavy gothic look.
I'd also recommend MAC Shadestick - you can use it as a cool eyeliner or to 'colour in' your whole eyelid and use as a stand alone colour or a base to an eyeshadow.
For coloured eyeliners I love Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil. It's creamy and easy to apply and looks great.

Where can you buy the MAC and Bobbi Brown eyeliners? I don't bother with eyeliner because it always smudges and I look like Morticia Addams. Do these eyeliners stay put, say, during an 8-hour working day?

(Sorry for hijacking your thread, Redpunto but I also wanted advice on this and I never thought to ask here!)

There are MAC and Bobbi Brown counters in Brown Thomas Grafton Street. Also MAC counters in BT2 Dundrum and Blanchardstown, oh and the airport! (how did I forget that, duh!). That's presuming you are from Dublin. There is also a MAC counter in Cork and Limerick. And in Debenhams in Belfast. Not sure about other Bobbi Brown counters. Probably in Harvey Nichols in Dundrum?

You can also buy online. A lot of people recommend strawberry.net for buying beauty products.

I would definately recommend a gel liner. They stay on really well and you can wear it as a smokey subtle day look (by smudging with a cotton bud) or a layered sharp night look (like liquid). As above, mac fluidline, bobbibrown gel liner and clinique brush on liner - (which is the cheapest and has best colour payoff imo) are all exellent and offer a good choice of colours. If your looking for a good allrounder go for a brown / grey if your light and black if your dark, then you can use eyeshadow over it if you want a different colour.

They range from e15 - e22 and you'll want a good brush with it as well. Mac brushes 210 + 208 are good for giving a fine line, theres also 209, 212, 263, 266 (which are bigger and I find more difficult to use) and bobbibrown fine eyeliner brush for a thicker line. They're expensive (e21 upwards)but you'll have it for years and is a great investment if you choose the right one -or five....im in love with mine ;) The bodyshop used to do a cheaper version of the 210 aswell but not sure if they have it anymore.

Ive tried loadsa low and high end pencil liners and they all end up smudging and fading on me, so ive been using a good quality dark eyeshadow with a damp brush as a liner which seems to last the day. If you try this just make sure to lightly powder under your eye and cover with tissue so you dont end up with a black one! If you going for liquid I find you dont have to spend too much on one. The bourjois ultra black clubbing is dark, longlasting and cheap. If you want to spend more ive heard lancome is good, I also like urban decay. Makeupalley has hundreds of reviews, its dead helpfull!

The MAC kohl liners dont smudge, you can buy their stuff (and Bobbi Brown) in Brown Thomas (and BT2 in Dundrum).

Not made by the same company although the packaging it quite similar. Gosh is a danish company whereas MAC is Canadian owned by Estee Lauder.

Also, MACs kohl pencils do smudge, that's the point of them whereas their powerpoint eyeliners don't smudge, their longlasting/waterproof eyeliners. The black powerpoint eyeliner is called Engraved.

Another recommendation for the MAC gel liner, it is amazing! got my make up done by a professional for last night and she used it, the effect was brilliant.

I use a Mac eye shadow thing for eyeliner, wet the brush and then use the powder. It works great and stays put. I also used Bobbi Brown's gel liner and found it good but hated the brush.

I've bought expensive eye-liners before but I always go back to Bourjois's Liner Stylo, I think it's amazing for dramatic smokiness!

has anyone used MAC shadowsticks?? i swear by them. i think the colour i get is sharks skin. i use it for eyeliner and it always stays put. other eyeliners and kohls were dire. the shadowsticks do the trick. though that gel liner sounds interesting... must try it.

I like Dior eyeliners. Been using them for years

MAC Fluidlines is amazing, but I don't like having to use a separate brush, it really isn't very practical when you're on the move. Other than that, it's amazing. I now use Liner Feutre by L'Oreal, which stays on well and gives a clean line. It's a felt tip one, and Rimmel's liquid eyeliners are pretty good as well.
