Greasy hair

Does this wreck anyone else's head? I wash my hair every other day and on the second day it looks and feels disgusting, makes me really self conscious. I really dont want to resort to washing it every day as it's supposed to be bad for it, and I share a bathroom with flatmates so it's awkward. Is there any great shampoo for greasy hair? Are those solid bars from Lush any use? I'm sick of my hair looking lank and greasy!

Try using a clear shampoo as opposed to an opaque one, if you know what I mean.

I find that opaque shampoos such as Pantene, Elvive etc. leave a definite build-up on my hair.

And obviously, if you use conditioner, make sure you only use it on the very ends of your hair.

Boots have a clarifying shampoo for greasy hair.
It in a huge bottle and it costs 1.15.
    It is legend.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah the clear shampoo sounds a good idea, what;s the Boots one called?

claire do you have highlighted or bleached hair?

My hairdresser once told me that as your roots start going your hair seems to be greasy quicker.

Its because when your hair is bleached or highlighted its quite dry where as you natural root isnt and so get greasy.

I noticed this myself with my own hair. When I have just had it coloured I could wash my hair every second day and it would be fine .. wouldnt need to tie it up or anything.

But when I have roots I have to wash every day or tie it up on the in-between day.

You need to use a gel type shampoo and not a creamy one. - as Honeyec said ... pantene and elveve will leave a build up

I found nutrogena excellent. Also changing your shampoo on a regular basis helps aswell

No, it isn't coloured. I seem to remember that when I did have highlights it improved the greasiness. I do alternate between shampoos but they're all 'opaque' ones at the minute. I actually realised that Neutrogena and Herbal Essences seemed to work better than TreSemme and the like so I'll switch back and see if it improves.

I have a irritating problem in that the day after washing, I get 'flyaways' and my hair is very springy, but the day after it's lank and greasy. Never right! Conditioning helps the flyaways but makes the roots really greasy so I try to compromise by only conditioning the ends.

your hair sounds a bit like mine, but mine doesn't get greasy as quickly (almost though).are you using styling products on your hair, perhaps to combat the flyaway situation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭hockeygirl

I would only condition the ends myself and then once a month I put in adeep conditionar all over.

The fact that your hair is fly away you probably handle your hair alot during the day? This would also cause it to get gresy quicker.

Im a hair twirler so I have to tape my hands to my desk to stop me playing with my hair :)

Styling products just make my hair greasy so I don't usually bother. Nope I don't handle my hair at all during the day, don't even brush it. I brush it quickly in the morning (even brushing it turns it into an oil slick) and don't touch it for the rest of the day. I just felt my hair now to see how bad it is and it feels sooo oily! I just hate the feeling of it, makes me feel dirty. Can't wait to get some Neutrogena and see if it helps!

Try Alberto Balsam juicy apple shampoo and conditioner, my bro has to use it.

I don't know if this will work but have you ever used dry shampoo? Batiste is very good and cheap, I've heard that in Dublin it sells out pretty quickly- I'm from Dublin but live in Newry and Semi Chem always have it and it's way cheaper than down south.

Do you straighten your hair alot? I usually get away with washing my hair every second day but if i straighten it (even without using styling products) i have to wash it the next day..

So if you do straighten your hair...ease up on it and it might help- wavy/beach curly hair is very much in fashion, just put a small amt of mouse into the hair and dry with diffuser.. this is whats getting me through without using straighteners!

+ 1 to the Batiste. It's in a green aerosol type bottle. My hair is the very same I have to wash it every 2nd day, pain in the ass! I've used Batiste and it definately gives you an extra day of not washing. I've bought it in Boots and in smaller chemists. http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1012075

Just wash it every day. Theres nothing really wrong with it imo.

Theres nothing worse than the feeling of greasy hair.

Hi OP, I had the same problem a while back. Didnt matter what shampoo I tried, my hair was manky in a day. I found a book in my mams about baking soda of all things but it said to mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of shampoo to get rid of build up....and it did!!

Seriously I now keep a tub of it in the bathroom its much cheaper than going and buyign expensive shampoos to try fix the problem

Baking powder is awesome tbh, fixes or cleans anything.Makes me wonder if it should be eaten though...

yeah its brilliant I also use it to keep my teeth white great stuff

Your hair sounds identical to mine! Greasy the day after I wash it, never straighten it, it's not dyed, don't use hair products, brush it once a day..
Have tried a few things but nothing really works. My sis has the same hair, which she now dyes blond and she says the drying out and brittle aspects of bleach works wonders! Other than that how about a thick hairband/bandana?! Another thing is when my hair was shorter I got away without washing it for longer..
Good luck (and I'll be checking the board to see if anything works!) ;)

I reckon just wash it everyday!

Until Saturday, I had fairly long, thick, straight hair. I washed it everyday; just shampoo, comb conditioner through, rinse. Point a dryer at it & use fingers to help the air circulate. No brushing, no styling, no hard work. ;)

I found that some brands just didn't suit my hair; now I avoid Timotei, Fructis, Herbal Essences... dunno if these have something in common? but they didn't suit me. Having said that, I've a curly-haired friend who uses Fructis all the time.

My recommendation for straight hair would be Pantene (think the green one is for straight hair?) or John Frieda (Brilliant Brunette/Sheer Blonde etc.) :pac:

Is it ok to put a whole load of baking powder into the shampoo and mix it up or how you you work the whole thing in relation to using it on your hair?
yeah its brilliant I also use it to keep my teeth white great stuff

How do u manage this?..mix it into a paste and brush with it???....

Just discovered the wonders of baking powder.. keeps fridge smelling great, can be used for cleaning all around the house???.. as brian mentioned..should it be mentined.. might start a new thread on it!!!:)

Ok, so I have a tin of it in the bathroom- you know the brand with the yellow and red tin with the red top?. For my hair I squirt the shampoo into my palm, tip about a teaspoon onto the shampoo, mix both together and apply to wet hair :) , lather and wash out. simple as. just be careful on coloured hair i reckon it might strip the colour out?

For the teeth I use it in one of two ways - 1. for a qiuick clean. I wet toothbrush, add toothpaste, dip the top of the toothbrush into the baking soda so it sticks to it and wash my teeth. tastes awful but works.
    2. If I want to scrub my teeth I wash them and then get lemon juice and mix it with some backing soda. I scrub this onto my teeth for a few minutes with a facecloth and then rinse afterwards. My granny always did this to me as a kid

So is it baking powder for the hair and bicarb for the teeth?

The purple Lush shampoo bar called Jumping Juniper is excellent for greasy hair. I find it great, works much better than the liquid shampoo they also recommend (I Love Juicy) which actually made my hair even greasier it was so stripping!!

Id recommend the new shampoo from L'Oreal, the pink one. For fine hair that gets greasy quick, or something. Cannt think of the name of it. Its really good though. Id normally have to wash my hair every second day, and even the day after Id wash my hair it used to look bad. But now I can get another day out of it, and it still looks good.

I know this doesn't help long term but if you're rushing somewhere or you dont have time to wash your hair, surprisingly a little bit of Talcum Powder in your hair - rub it in to the roots [it doesn't look like dandruff if you rub it in properly and jus use a small amount] takes away the greasy look! It actually does work!
