    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone knows if ripping a CD with iTunes means having Apple gaying up your MP3's with DRM bollox?

Can anyone recommend good CD ripping software for OS-X that will give me just plain music files with none of the DRM stuff attached. Ive tried Max but its giving me some wierd error and Ive had no response to my post in their forum yet so I may have to look elsewhere. Any and all feedback welcome.

    Dave

No, iTunes does not use any DRM on any tracks you rip from CDs. Just be sure to set it to import ot mp3 and not AAC or any other format. Open Preferences --> Advanced --> switch to Importing tab --> choose mp3 and a decent bit-rate (192 kbps).

 Holy muvver of GOB !!!! Now that is offensive !!!

    . . . . I shall need counseling now !!!

On topic, DRM is applied to AAC tracks bought from the iTunes store to stop you sharing them around. Of course if you then make a CD from these tracks and then rip it . . . well that would be just plain illegal, wouldn't it ?

    - I believe 440Hz was referring to the "gaying up your MP3's"

    - No it wouldn't....Analogue loophole! (the ripping at least)

All tracks ripped from CDs by iTunes are replaced on-the-fly with Village People and Pet Shop Boys covers. If you do it on an iPhone 3G that has not been jailbroken you get Freddie Mercury instead, but only on the €100 contract, all other contracts get Elton John.

lmfao!! That was exactly the image that came into my head when I read it first! And then I felt bad, hence the comment :p

So its only stuff that you get from the Apple store that has (IMO pointless) DRM stuff attached to it?

Just out of curiosity I was wondering what formats people prefer, I was thinking about changing from MP3 to OGG Vorbis but not alot of media devices support it.

Is the iTunes and iTunes Plus content not the same price now, both 99c?

Correct, they should be all the same price now.
Which makes finding them harder

Why? Why not AAC, is it because of compatibility?

Probably making that point based on compatibility issues, but also with size. I mean they are both lossy formats so you would want a discerning ear and some good almost audiophile quality gear to hear the difference most of the time, but you will certainly see the difference in file size. For practicality reasons most people to choose to import to MP3, but if you have unlimited space then importing to AAC might be preferable. Can always convert that AAC to MP3 for non-AAC supporting players.

For example, if you are backing up your CD collection and planning to relegate your CDs to some dusty shelf Id be more inclined to import to AAC rather than MP3, but thats just cos I hear the difference and it bugs me! :)

There's a little + beside the price for the iTunes Plus content.

Finally the iTunes prices have evened out for us Nordies - 99c = 79p as near as dam it, at one point I seem to remember 99c only being around 72p! but they were still charging us 79.
