Sutton to Malahide - suitable for running?

Has anyone here run the road that goes from Sutton to Malahide? I often run from city centre to Swords going via Griffith Avenue and Santry, but I need to do my long run tomorrow so was going to run from city centre to Swords, but instead go along the coast, through Sutton and then through Portmarnock and Malahide to Swords.

I think it's safe enough from Fairview to Sutton (is there a footpath the whole way?), but I'm unsure about the Sutton to Malahide bit.

Any ideas if it's suitable for running? Won't have an opportunity to drive it in advance. Will check it out on Google Earth, but can be difficult sometimes to see exactly what's going on through that.

There's a stretch of road with no footpath from Baldoyle to Portmarnock, it's a couple of K. That time of day facing the traffic it may not be so bad. Let me know how you get on. I'm considering the same route for my long run.

    Cheers

personally I would say it isn't runnable, it's a narrow busy fast road with numerous bends and buses use it too. It is a hairy enough cycle, never mind run!

Didn't do it in the end, as was unable to have it coincide with my lift home from Swords. Was also advised against it by a colleague who had a near miss when cycling there a few weeks back.

Am just back from my long run though - fantastic feeling to have clocked up 16 miles on a Friday evening. Nice gentle short recovery run tomorrow and that's me done for the week. Now it's beer o'clock.......

I've run that route around 20 times. The section from Baldoyle to Portmarnock has no footpath for about 1K, so best to run it on a weekend morning before 10am, while facing the traffic, and in full daylight. Portmarnock to Malahide has footpath all the way and some beautiful views along the coast.

Has anyone ever considered incorporating Howth Hill for their long run?? I live in Raheny and my goal is to do this some time before the Phoenix Park half in Sept.

It would be nice to get people's views on this

Not quite on the same route, but I do run Howth to Shankill (23 mile-ish) for my final long runs. There is pretty much a cycle-pesdedrian path along the whole way. Any number of shops for refeshments and the like.

As I live in Bray, I am very much heading home and as a back up I carry a return dart ticket.

It really is a great run, flat for the most part with some hills around Dalkey - Killiney. Try and time it so the tide is in along Clontarf otheriwse if it is a warm day there can be a bit of stink, making it hard to fill the lungs.

Best of all is when you look back from Killiney and you can see how far you have come. You take in Howth, Clontarf, Docklands, East link, Sandymout, Blackrock, Dalkey, Bono's gaff and a big ice cream if you choose to finish at Killiney :).
Always thought that a Howth to Bray run would make a great race (30 miles I reckon)

There is a nice run from Baldoyle church into sutton loops around howth and abck to the Church in Baldoyle 10 mile run, and you can add another 9 on by doing a second lap..

    Sounds like a great run!

OK then I'm sold, it can be done :-) As mentioned I live in Raheny so the loop around Howth would be nearer to 14/15 miles (too long betwwen now and my half marathon prep), so maybe I'll drive to Sutton / Baldoyle and do the run from there.

I've included Howth hill in a long run on a coupleof occasions. The loop from Sutton Cross is approx 7 miles, so you could definitely include it in a long run, starting out from Raheny.

Thats a great run..I run from Malahide castle through malahide Portmarnock Baldoyle into Sutton..Up to the railway bridge on left then back down past the "hole in the wall" beach back into Malahide park.Distance 17.5miles on the gps..Yeah there is a small section without a path so not suitable at night but fine otherwise..
I have run the same but up into howth head and back down the Sutton end..Took me 2 weeks to get the lead out of my legs..Really hard going!
