Ok as the title suggests i need help to get fit.Im 6.2-6.3 and I weigh close to 16 stone.Im 18 and am in dire need to get fit as its affecting my confidence.Im going to the local gym 3 times a week and working out for about 2 hours before i hit the sauna etc.The main part i need help in is my diet.I have read a few diet plans but dont like them for 2 reasons 1)The diet seems really bland and would still leave me hungry 2)i just dont understand the diet they are talking about because i know nothing about food nutrition.Could anyone layout a diet plan that suits my needs and is simple to understand for anyone that looked at it...food i could have for dinner, in the night etc.Id really like to know of food that is very filling and yet very healthy at the same time.I really want to commit to this as iv said its time to make a stand and solve my problem once and for all.So far the gym has been a blast and am enjoying it with a few friends that also go with me,although they are very fit already.

Moved from PI to a better place for the answers.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Read the stickies and other umpteen threads of a similar nature.

    Come back with specific questions.

I don't mean to seem offensive anty, but I'm assuming here that if you're 18 and weigh 16 stone, that the reason this diet seems bland and would still leave you hungry, is because it's not lots of junk food.
At the end of the day, getting down to a reasonable physique, from where you are, requires willpower and effort. I haven't seen the diet plan you speak of, but it doesn't have to be doom and gloom. The trick here is not to starve yourself until you're skinny, but to change eating habits until you hit your ideal weight and stay there. I've started down this path myself, and it really does work. It will require effort though, and you gotta decide if it's worth it.
There are multiple resources out there. The stickies on here seem great.

But the principals will be the same for everybody.

If you want to lose weight you need to eat less food than is burnt by your body's metabolism. There is no perfect diet to help you do this. Eating more protein-rich foods, veg and loosing the highly processed, high sugar high sat. fat foods and drinks are the basic good moves.

Read the stickies. Lots of info there. Come back with a rough plan of what you envisage your typical daily diet to be and I'm sure people will be able to help you from there. Nobody can spoonfeed you this info because we don't know what foods you like and you daily routine etc. etc.

Enough of that shite thanks. If you must criticise, at least make it somewhat constructive.

My shite is constructive - teaching the OP to fish rather than giving him/her a solitary tin of tuna. If he/she (and the other numerous thread starters per day who clearly haven't done any background info on nutrition as per the stickies) cannot read through the wealth of info and make a start then there is little hope imo that they will stick to any plan.

Anty1, if you are from this planet and still haven't read the stickies start now. Whilst reading you could do worse than the following:

    Start lots of this:
    • chicken
    • tuna
    • almonds
    • small bits of fruit when hungry (grapes, orange, banana, apple, etc)
    • tonnes to chopped veg for dinner (carrots, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cauliflower, brocoli)
    • activty (walking)

    Avoid this:
    • alcohol
    • fast food
    • sweet stuff
    • fizzy drinks
    • procrastination

//makes mental note to follow up with Anty1 in 3 months

You don't get to be 16stone without doing lots of things wrong with your diet and i would imagine your friends that are in good shape eat quite healthy and train very hard so ask them what to eat and lets face eating right is not rocket science so get started on the basics first

Well i just finished the lc and that was a killer for me... i was 14 stone before i entered the lc and was joined a basketball club and soccer club and trained regularly. After the lc began i was forced by my parents to quit these and study my ass off...i more or less stopped activities etc and as iv seen iv gained 2 stone of pure fat and changed my muscles to fat aswell..Hopefully ill get back to my previous weight and have a toned body again for me...iv always been a bit of tank but in a good way...now instead of being a tank im just blubber etc One other question, this may sound stupid but which parts of the body tone up when you are running on the thread mill...does it tone up any of your upperbody..ie waist area.

Correct me if I am wrong but, the threadmill will make you lose weight not tone. Hit the weights if you want to tone.

Well you know six packs are made in the kitchen.

as in i know that but does it affect any of your upper body when you do the threadmill...and yes i am doing weights again.Any good training moves that tone your abs..besides the basic sit up?

honestly, best way i found to lose weight was to volunteer to walk dogs for the local rescue centre. they always have some that need walking, and you wouldnt want to let them down now would you? guilt is a wonderful thing! i now run the dogs, instead of walking. as far as food goes - EAT LESS. think what you want then halve it. and always have fruit, veg and cooked pasta in the fridge, great for snacking. (not together!!)
thought about doing a marathon? there are great training programmes available online (hal higdon, irishfit) and i guarantee you will lose weight and tone up. for extra ab exercises, there are loads online that show you exactly what to do, but if you are a member of a gym - there should be a qualified instructor there who will show you?

If i want to lose weight and am currently at 6.2" and 16 stones, how much calories should i having a day....I was also wondering is it bad to have a lot of fruit because you are just replacing one food for another....i have been eating a lot of bananas and apples the past 2 weeks now and am just wondering. No one answered my question if running on the thread mill and lose weight around your abs.

First of all I beg of you, beg of you to stop using the words 'tone-up', 'tone' etc. Arggh damn tv weight loss programmes!!

'Which part of the body does the treadmill tone' makes no sense. 'Tone' = reduced fat and muscle building. The treadmill will burn calories which will burn fat off your body. It won't build muscle in your upper body but may build some muscle in your lower body. Lift weights to build muscle and lose fat. Do cardio to burn fat.

BossArky has given all the advice on food and what to avoid below and that is pretty much all you need.

To answer your q on calories, don't worry about how much you are getting in for now. The most important thing that will get you quick results is eat the right foods and eat ONLY when you are genuinely hungry! The vast majority of people eat too much food for their energy needs.

I should know, I was one of them.

Ok so far iv lost half a stone...I was wondering am i losing any weight around my abs?im dieting and also doing the treadmill, rowing machine, bike, walker thing and weights..Im worried that im not doing anything for my ab region as that the region that most affects my confidence....I dont like doing crunch and sit ups as they hurt my lower back... Any advice would be great.

I guess I'll wheel out the old forum favourite "you can't spot reduce fat". If you want to lose fat from around your abs, you'll just have to lose fat from your entire body and wait for it to go from your abs. Crunches and sit ups aren't going to reduce the level of fat around your abs significantly. They might build up the muscle a bit, but you won't see it, if it's covered by a layer of fat.

Well done on losing half a stone. If you've lost half a stone of fat, I'm sure some of it's from your ab region. Keep up the good work.

Also, what are you aiming for? Six pack abs? Or do you just want to lose the fat from your stomach area?

not looking for a six pack...i just want to look normal and have a flat stomach

Have you asked them at the gym to give you a weights program?
