I went to NY last summer for 10 days and brought 2 different adapters that specifically were for the US and neither worked. Is this to do with the voltage difference? Can anyone give tips? Im off to San Diego for 2 weeks on Monday and want to be able to charge my camera battery and phone!!!

Depends what you use. Some electronics wont accept 110v. I found that with battery chargers.

Laptop chargers and phone chargers are usually backward compatible with both 110 and 240v.

It's not the adapter at fault it's the charger that you are normally using. Check what it says on it about voltages. If it says 110v-240v, give or take 10 or so, then you'll be OK, otherwise you need to find some other charger for your devices.

Thanks for the quick reply! I tried the two adaptors with both chargers and a hair dryer and they just wouldnt work. I'm just wondering if i need a converter or something (i'm really bad at physics!) to make sure they'll work. I might just buy a new camera there if all else fails!

The charger I have now (different phone to when I was in NY) says
    INPUT: 110-240 VAC ~100mA, 50-60Hz
I don't want to bother bringing one of the adaptors if it wont work again and don't want to buy another useless one either!

That will work in the US with just the plug pin adapter.

Great! Thanks a million. Maybe I could look into getting a charger to match that voltage you mentioned!
