PSN game sharing

I only just found out about this myself, having owned a PS3 since launch :o

Apparently, any PSN games you buy can be installed on up to 5 different PS3 consoles. All you have to do is log into another PS3 using the PSN ID that you bought a game with and download and install any games that are in that IDs bought games list (except for Warhawk apparently).

This essentially means you can share/swap any games you own with 4 other people.

Anyone interested in swapping some games (I've got quite a few)? Gimme a shout, PSN ID: gloobag

problem with this though is that you have to give a complete stranger your access details to your account. I think i'd only do this with people I know.

change the password to something generic and make sure theres no personal details available before letting anyone sign in as you

Yep, Helix is right. It's as simple as deleting all personal info from your account before sharing your logon info and then change the password once the swap has been complete.

Reading threads on a few other forums and there are plenty of others doing it this way.

yes. The 5 download times is there so that you can re-download the game to your account 5 times before you have to pay for it again. If you give the game to 5 of your friends and then your HDD dies you will have to buy the game again.

You're actually wrong there. It's the account itself that is allowed to be tied to up to 5 consoles, not the game. You could potentially download the same game a million times on all five consoles, as long as they all used the same account.

    I'm new to PS3.

Does this mean any game I have bought can be used on my mates PS3 while I can play it at home in my own account?

    Example.
I have Wipeout HD so I go to my mates, log in with my a/c and download wipeout. Then I sign out of my a/c on his PS3, can I still play it at home on my own a/c and he can play it too?

OK guys I'm going to wade in as a moderator and moderate this thread through the power of words... in text format :)

Don't worry, I'm not locking the thread and banning everyone. I've asked a friend of mine who works on Sony about game sharing, and if it is legal. His response (keep in mind he's a developer, not in legal dept.) was that it's up to the developers to allow multi-license sharing. Though intended for multiple users on the same PS3 system, they have a provision for activated PS3 units over the network, so it is not illegal.

It is however, unethical as far as a game developer is concerned (it seems). Though they don't want to hinder people's experiences, they would rather if 2 people enjoy a game, for those 2 people to buy it and support future endeavors by the developer.

    Now the warning bits:
If you loose data, have errors, or encounter problems, the developers will not help you if your license is on 2 different PS3 units. Sony are unlikely to offer proper support if they discover you've been game sharing too. And yes, they can see how many licenses are on how many machines, etc.

The other thing, as a user, is to be very careful. It's lovely to see the community here sharing games and being friends, but keep in mind if you bought a game, your credit card details are on your PS3. Allowing someone to login and use your details could expose your credit card details, and boards cannot be held responsible for this.

I'd be interested doing this with someone although I don't have much.
    I have:
A lot of LittleBigPlanet stuff (including MGS levels and costumes and God of War stuff)
Super StarDust HD and all expansions for it.
    Killzone 2 map pack.
GHWT DLC: The Killers track pack
    Flower

    That's all.

scaremongering tbh, considering sony actually tell you how to do it, and tell you that youre allowed to do it

I'm only passing on what a mate who works at Sony says to me. Yes, it probably is a bit of scaremongering, and Sony only publish rules... it's up to the developers to follow up with it. Sony reckon the reason devs don't lock down this stuff is simply because multiple accounts on the same PS3 unit are affected. This might get rectified in a future update, but there's other stuff to fix first, apparently.

You can do it with Wipeout HD. You just can't be logged into your account on 2 PS3's and play it. If you download it on someone else's PS3, log out, then they log into their account and play it, you can play against them.

I've already given Wipeout HD to a friend and raced against him online.

Be warned though they can and will delete your account if they get wise, not sure what their capture rate is but i've heard of cases where accounts were closed... so ye should be careful if it's an account you want(COD/FIFA rank etc....)

Safest thing to do is have your tradeables on an account you won't mind them closing
