The first is from Portmagee Harbour and the second is Waterville Beach at approx. 10pm in the rain! I don't think either are great but there is something about both of them thats stopping me deleting them.

And I know the sensor is manky. I tried cleaning it to no avail. :(

What a pity the sun didn't shine as the scenery is stunning around there.

I see what you mean. Both are flat but the basic composition is nice.

The first one may work if the Boat & Rope were kept in colour & the rest converted to a contrasty mono (& clone out that street light)

Can you do that in LightRoom?

    #2 is quite decent.
#1 left me cold, seaside cold.

You can selectively desaturate colours in 1.41, in 2.0b you can, IIRC, paint on areas, and desaturate them.
If you need more info shout and I'll dig something up.

    Okay,

I must say that I like both of these as signpost shots - you know the type you shoot and then go "I must go back there when this and that has changed".

The first one: it's a pity about the sky because there isn't much you can do with the clouds to make them more contrasty and brooding. If you're going to do a conversion I'd boost up the contrast as far as possible without looking too plastic because otherwise you're going to wind up with a comparatively grey shot as in the colour shot is already fairly grey.

Two I like a lot. I think if you can boost the saturation in the sand a little more, you might get a little more life into the shot...I might also have held the camera down a little further on the occasion but I'm currently addicted to a 10-20mm WA and that's what I want to achieve.

I love that area. I must go down there again soon.

I think (personally) they look a little washed out, not enough saturation or contrast in them..

    +1 for that
they do seem kind of dull and colourless but you could help that alot in LR

Maybe he went for that drab overcast cold look though?
I take your +1 and replace it with a -1.

It's an improvement of sorts, half way would proberly be perfect, I don't like your shadows on each corner or whatever you call them.

Overdone it a little on the vignetting, I have to say. Sky is also horribly washed out so I'd look at toning it down there. For me, colourwise, the problem is that the green is so flat.

For me, I'm not sure about the composition of the first one. it seems a bit like there's too much blank space maybe? I had a go at making it a bit more 'letter-boxy', I hope you don't mind? (attached, cos I STILL! can't figure how to embed an image from my PC!) I also boosted the colour temp a bit, upped the blacks and contrast, and reduced the overall greens a bit. Not sure if any of that works, but it's a suggestion!

The second one though I love! It has a real 'painting' feel to it, the way the sand blends to the sea blends to the sky... I like. Nice work!

    Hi Ballyman

I like the second one very much.

I hope its ok to have a go at changing number two. I'm experimenting a bit with monochrome. I've cropped and rotated in Lightroom - sorry lost your copyright as a result. I've greyscaled it and then set to split toned.

Mods - please remove if I've stepped out of line here!

I really like this. Thanks! Can you send me the settings you used on this?

Is there an easy way to dump Lightroom settings for a photo?
    With paper and pencil :

    Lightroom v1.3.1
    Develop mode settings
    Exposure +1.87
    Recovery 35
    Fill light 12
    Blacks 12

    Clarity 0

    Grayscale
    Red -12
    Orange -21
    Yellow -19
    Green +4
    Aqua 0
    Blue +4
    Purple -9
    Magenta +4

    Split toning
    Highlights
    Hue 184
    Sat 32
    Balance -4
    Shadows
    Hue 42
    Sat 53

I think they are the main ones.
