Got this on my laptop aswell today. It's a real pain in the *rse to remove, but using a combination of Spybot S&D and Malware bytes software, seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the link above. It was a great help.
(BTW. am disgusted at my current version of McAfee, which didn't see this rogue software coming through!)

There isn't one AV program that will detect virus/malware everytime...not even the latest and greatest Symantec

Got a particularly nasty version of this during the week. Google redirects, not being able to update any antivirus software, couldn't download files, not being able to access virus removal forums, background changes and false BSOD's.

If anybody has the same problem they should use Dr. webs cureit here:

    http://www.freedrweb.com/

Did the trick for me. You'll have to transfer it with a USB key or similar due to not being able to download files.

Run the steps in the stickies above, or the linked thread, in Safe Mode.

By the way be very careful using Dr. Web Cureit, is very aggressive and gives a lot of false positives

Followed those steps, got rid of it, but it is still freezin on the windows xp screen just before where user's profile should come up,it will run in safe Mode alright, maybe it doesn't have anything to do with antivirus xp.tried restoring it but there is no restore points..

Sounds like some of your system files or the boot.ini file have been corrupted, try running a repair off your original XP disk or repairing the boot.ini by using the repair console on your xp disk.
