    Hi,

    I've a bit of a dilemma...

I am in Dublin nearly a yr now (assistant IT support position in a company), the job is going well and I like it.

The only problem is work can sometimes dry up every 2/3 weeks for a couple of days (which isn't a problem in itself - so far)

I tend to do things I've been putting off/long term stuff or even do stuff which will help me when I get work again.

Of course this runs out too so I might be doing nothing for a few hours or even a whole day (which I hate, I don't like overusing the internet as the company is pretty good to provide it and have a fair use policy with regard to personal use, so a lot of the time I'm trying to come up with stuff to do)

In a couple of months a member of staff will be returning after a long period of leave.

They will get a lot of my workload (I am doing a good portion of their job in the meantime) so I am supposed to be given more responsibility with other areas, this sounds good to me, until then though I will be doing much the same routine.

Now, I am originally from the south of the country and my family and friends live there.

I said to myself I would trial Dublin for a year and see how it works out but I feel a loyalty to the company/people I work with and now it's approaching a year I'm unsure about leaving.

I have a handful of friends in Dublin but some will be leaving shortly.

I was considering moving back /getting a job in Munster - am I mad???

Even when I'm posting this, I see all the "laid off" threads in Work and Jobs...

I suppose if I were to weigh up pros and cons of leaving job...

    Pros of leaving:

Get a job another level up as now have a yrs exp
    Higher payscale salary possible
    Closer to home and friends
Save money in petrol in going up and down (calculated it at about 1500 euro a yr)
    Accommodation/cost of living cheaper
Work often repetitive/boring (although that could be every job!)

    Cons of leaving:

Like working with colleagues/ work challenging
Get on well with current housemates
High possibility of promotion to a full support position around Christmas and Bonus
Pay is generally less outside Dublin (lower cost of living - generally )
Entering weak economy - possible last in, first out approach to letting people go if new company goes belly up (assuming I get a job)

I'm still undecided though, If I was leaving I would of course have a new job lined up before I leave the old one.

I suppose I'm asking what would others do/ have done in my position? Is 1 yr or 2 yrs better to stay at 1 company?

Ultimately I want to get on the management track so maybe changing jobs would get me up there quicker too...

Appreciate all the wisdom you can bestow :)
    Thanks,
    V

Tbh reading between the lines I think your mind is made up. I could be wrong but I think you would prefer a move home. Go with your heart.

I think you need to talk to your manager about what's going to happen when the other person comes back. Explain the situation and make it clear that you're ready to step up and take on more responisibility. See how this goes down and what the possibility of development is. There might be a promotion in the pipeline or new projects coming up that you can get involved in.

If this is an option then why not stay a bit longer. It seems you like your job and colleagues, so a bit more experience on your CV wouldn't hurt.

It also wouldn't hurt to start looking at jobs back home, just to see what's about and maybe going for a couple of interviews. I suppose what I'm saying is just to keep your options open. Currently you don't really know what your options are in terms of specific opportunities, working conditions, salary etc. Without any of this I'm not surprised you're finding it hard to make a decision!

    Good luck!

look for a job at home or in the area. There is no need to leave until you get a job or see what opportunities available at home. good luck with that

Pick an online course, such as CCNA, etc, and do it online during the quite periods.

if your half tempted to leave, but would stay if you were sure you would get more responsibility, then talk to your manager. an awful lot of people think managers mind readers, but the fact is that if you dont air your thoughts and grievances, there is nothing a manager can do.

as always, use tact and phrase your questions in a positive way, that shows you like your job at present and want to grow.

if your manager is any way decent, he/she will be straight with you and tell you that they have more work/responsibility for you, or there is nothing in the pipeline yet.

if they are not so straight up, and say they will give you more responsibility in time, but they dont deliver, then find somewhere better. give it a time frame, perhaps 6 months. if things havnt improved by then its time to move on.

Well I think look for a job in the south and if you find one grab it. Your post suggests that you want to head home

    Good luck xxxxxxxx
