Budget: As little as possible, see build below.

Intended use: College work (studying science next year), internet, e-mail, Word processing, ripping + playing my extensive music collection, image editing (Gimp), some music recording.
    Multitasking is a biggy.

Mobility: Weight is more important than size here, I'll be taking it everywhere with me.

Warranty: A year would be grand - just need it to cover the start + any problems with the system.

Now, I've configged an Inspiron 1525 at €872 inc VAT & delivery with the following:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.10 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows Vista SP1™ Home Premium - English
    1 Year Base Warranty
    2.0 Mega pixel web camera
Jet Black Colour with Matte Finish
    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™
    4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
    320GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
Integrated Intel® Graphic Media Accelerator X3100
8x DVD+/-RW Optical drive, including SW
    9-cell 85WHr Li-Ion primary battery

    Don't think I need a gfx card?
The Inspiron seems to be fine - how good are they build-quality wise?
I'd love an M1330, but the same config (+ fingerprint scanner) comes out at over €1000, the studio 15 is in the middle, but it has a huge price on the 9-cell, which puts its price up above the XPS.
Ideally, I'd like those specs for less...

    Also, do Dell/other manufacturer/NUIG do laptop/software deals/discounts?

I'd go for a vostro 1310, light weight, and you can pick up a very well spec'd one for a reasonable price. If you're not going to be doing much gaming then the Intel x3100 will more than cover you as far as graphics.
The vostro range can be found on the dell small business site, everyone can buy them, not just business users.
Oh and the Dell offers that colleges do tend to be awful value for money, well that's going by the UCD one last year, wouldn't go down that route if cost is a concern.
