Was wondering if someone could help me out, I had pneumonia about 6 months ago, there was complication on the road to recovery and long story short I've only recently recovered. So having been away from the sun for the last 6 months I've become pretty pale even by Irish standards so much so that people have commented on it

I'm going to Greece in 3 weeks so I'm looking to try and get from sickly pale to your standard Irish pale, I have pretty much no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to tanning so can someone recommend a place were a bloke can go without looking like a fool, how many sessions do to, how long and what I can do to minimize the risks?

Go anywhere they have beds. Start with 5 mins every 3 days, increase to 10 mins after a few sessions and you should be back to normal pale in no time.

It depends on your skin type, if you go to a reputable salon they'll be able to advise you on how many minutes your skin can handle and how often you'll be able to go on them.

You've absolutely no reason to bother with sunbeds. Get yourself some high spf suncream, and with a bit of sun, you'll be back to 'normal' in no time. (I take it you'll be going from blue to white!)

There's no need to risk a sunbed - the damage it does way outdoes the benefits.

+1 if your paleness really bothers you that much fake it but I don't think you should bother. I say that as a proud pale Irish woman. It is not a crime to be pale it is (IMHO) more of a crime to put yourself at risk by using a sunbed.

If you'ver decided to use sunbed, then do. There's as much information on the web in favour as against.

If you are ony using to get a base tan, then you are unlikely to do damage. Much the same as inhaling second hand cigarette smoke. there's always the theoretical chance that damage wil lbe done, but you would have to be most unfortunate to get cancer from a few uses of teh beds.

Suggest you use a standup and 3 mins for first three sessions, with three days between sessions. Use a quality moisturiser - ask salon staff for assistance. they increase for 4th to 7th sessions to 5 mins.

enjoy the hols and hope you get back to normal soon!

UV light alters the production of collagen in the skin, causes damage to the dna of the skin, and without exception, raises your risk of skin cancers and premature ageing. All staff at a salon will do is spout the same pseudo science that they've been taught themselves. The information available that favours the use of sunbeds is spurious in the extreme.

This is a reliable sourse of fact on the matter, and other articles are available corroborating the findings webwide.

You've had a bad health scare and now you want to use a sunbed - really?

    Goodbye pneumonia hello cancer

Do not use a sun bed

we all know that sun can damage skin. We all know that lack of sunlight can cause other problems with lack of Vitamin D. Still and all, I do not see many irish or indeed other residents of this country rushing to buy burkas and wearing these with dark glasses!

We all know that smoking is bad, but I cannot avoid inhaling some bit of second hand smoke if I go into a pub or restaurant of an evening. That dies not mean that I will get lung cancer. it theoretically increases my risk as against someone who never inhales second hand smoke or any other carcinogen, ie lives in a bubble inhaling bottled oxygen.

the lad was ill recently, he is going on a sun holiday. good luck to him. he does not want to appear fishbelly white whilst in Greece and all he wants is some bit of a base tan before he goes.

My honest opinion is that a few sessions on a sunbed will not kill him and will not give him cancer.

Go off and enjoy the holidays. Have the few sessions on the beds before you go and make sure that you wear sun protection abroad. the little bit of a tan you get before you go does not prevent you burning when out there.
