Hi all. Im fed up of this country and am seriously thinking about moving to OZ. Well, that was until I found out I dont meet the requirements. I am over 30 so the one year visa is a no go. I have worked in various different jobs over the years. The skill that Im qualified at which is and engineering technician on gets me 85 points. I need 120 to qualify.
Has any had this trouble before.

OP have you been to Australia before? Maybe go on a holiday first to see what you think of it - if you're going to base your life there you should check out schools, medical system etc. I loved Oz for a year but wouldn't live there and know lots of people like that. Is there any way you can increase your points? Do some courses etc? It's a hard enough country to emigrate too unless your're a hairdresser or a florist!

I lived in Australia from a young age & have both Irish & Australian citizenship, and i can tell you they are VERY strict about who they let in, not like this country who doesnt even know how many immigrants are here!:pac:

I dont know why anyone wouldnt want to live there, OZ is amazing country with so much to offer, you dont get ripped off & they actually know what customer service is...

Anyway enough ranting but basically if you dont have enough points you either need to find a aussie citizen to sponsor you or forget the idea...

Well we live in the EU so we've freedom of travel so we can live anywhere we want within the EU. As I said I loved Oz but after a year there I wouldn't live there so I think the OP needs to have a holiday to see what they think. They might find that they'd miss home too much or maybe the job oppertunites aren't what they think they are. I think alot of people think it's constant sun and beach with lots of gorgeous people - it does actually rain in Sydney! You're right though - if they don't have the points forget about it.

It rains properly too. None of this Irish drizzle.

But you are right. We are all gorgeous.

85 you should get points for being a native english speaker..

you should also get points because you're not over 35

there should be other points available to you.

maybe contact a visa agency and have a chat they usually have "ways" to get you to meet it :)

Well, from what my brother was telling me its hard to get a job in oz but life in general is better my brother tells me they are more relaxed people they like to live not exist and they don't consider they don't sell their soul's to their job or money because they believe enjoying life is important. my brother didnt have any problems getting a visa and he doesnt have an have an academic qualifcation but he is positive and wants to work. good luck

Don't restrict yourself to Australia. Plenty other nice countries out there, if you can handle learning a new language. Or try Canada, S.Africa etcetera.

    Same here, best thing ever!

OP if you are that skilled and have a lot experience then try contact a company over here directly. If you have a lot to offer then they will sponsor you to enter the country. There is a ridiculously high demand for skilled workers here such is the amount of work at the moment.

    Where there's a will there's most certainly a way.

Yeah. I lived there for four years basically sponsoring myself as a lot of people do. No wrangling there then. Before you ask I went in on the one year visa but to get that extended (indefinitely, I got a new 4 year visa whenever I changed jobs) is dead easy but it's not an option for the OP.

To the OP how about trying to get sponsored by a company. If you know somebody down there you could get them to look out for you. It's fairly easy for them to sponser you (if they want to).

Before you make the big leap though if you can get down there try it for a year. The grass is always greener and all that. The major, major benefit down there is the weather. Their winter is about the same as our current summer :(

In Sydney anyway I was working with guys who had a lot of the same complaints that people here only think happen in Ireland.

    Why Oz?

If you're sick of this country then emmigration isn't your answer, baby steps my friend baby steps!

USIT have an under 35 programme for a 1 year Canadian visa. I'm on it now.. If you want to get away for a while then apply now, spend next year away and then see how you feel after that.

You'd be amazed at how much you miss home when you're not there!!

Plus if you decided to stay, having a job and any kind of degree will help with that.

Everyone goes to Oz, i can't really fathom why, never been a place that's interested me.

Apply for Xavi's job in Perth....he seems to do nothing only post on Boards all day, no way he's needed over there.

Theres loads of work there, thats the reason most people i know are going. Another reason for me is theres loads of irish over there so for me anyway i didnt feel as homesick, us Irish have our special sense of humour etc i think and its good to have other Irish people about sometimes (not that id just surround myself with irish friends etc but its good to have other people in the same boat around)

I did the J1 out oin Canada and loved it out there, I would probably pick Toronto over Perth but in my profession the work just isnt in Canada, plus id need to do 6months retraining...so oz for me is the obvious choice.

Im really going to miss Ireland, i love it here and love my life here but I just cant get the work (and i loved Oz while out there). If it dont work out, ill just come home.

the amount of people emmigrating to Oz at the moment is shockng, every second person i talk to is going

An awful lot of people I know, including my 21 year old brother (who is a final year apprentice carpenter) are looking at moving Down Under within the next few years. It's crazy to think that we'd be at a stage when so many people are seriously considering emigrating.

OP if your not yet 31 you can still apply for the working holiday visa.
my understanding of the point system is that it doesent totally exclude you from the process. your just low on the list of applicants.
also maybe check out where you come on the point scale for new zealand. its a good country too.

    +1
    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/index.htm
If you apply before you are 31 then you are entitled to your visa.

Also I seriously think you should reconsider your points total
    http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/175/eligibility-applicant.htm
    Age - 25
English - 15 (can get 25 if you show certs to be proficient
Nominated skills - 60?? Not sure, if you are a skilled qualified engineer (I don't know what category a engineer technician is?)
work experience - 10 if you worked 3 of the last 4 years or 5 if 1 out of 4 years
Occupation demand - 20/15 if in demand

Now I am pretty sure you may be able to get higher than 85 there, but I am only guessing your skills

I just cant understand why it is always Australia  I have no want to go there for more than a holiday and people are always off there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,658 ✭✭✭✭The Sweeper

Because it's a predominantly caucasian, English-speaking, first-world country with fab weather and affordable housing, where the quality of life is higher because the economy has not yet suffered an inflation bubble that prices a house beyond the reach of most first-time buyers, the residents work to live as opposed to living to work and generally it's easier to find your niche because it's a young, growing country that's sufficiently geographically isolated that it doesn't have pretensions on world domination.

Easier to get into than the US and has nice weather.

yeah jesus seriously you have no idea how much better life is when you live in a nice climate, that's the thing I dread most about Ireland, the weather and looking at the scumbag tracksuit people in my area. I mean as rich as Ireland got in the past 15 years it's still a miserable depressing country, due to the weather and the negative people.

Go to New Zealand, they are crying out for people as well and it's a much nicer country. Aussies are arseholes.

    Australians=English
    Kiwi's=Irish

sweetie, if i was single I would!

However, for yourself - with your skills (mechanic and own your own business, I do believe?) you should have no problem in moving over. You would need to fulfil the necessary "solvency" criteria and fill out endless paperwork but i would say you would get there... go and set the ball rolling if its your dream. All u can do is try. Best of luck. (you could always try NZ too. its not so bad there either!!)

Me, I can only contend with hols and visits at the moment. There will be no shifting the OH! But at least I can just get up and go at any time so am grateful for that.

    S. Africa ?

Not a great Idea, I have friends who are south africans and they moved to UK cos they were fed up of being broken into, the last straw was when The husband had a gun held to his head.

Seriously, generally speaking if you are white you have to have a house with a huge wall round it and guard dogs, you have to have an electronic gate so you don't have to get out of your car, you then drive to your garage which is also electronic, drive intoyour garage and only exit your car whn the door is closed. Then you get into your house via a door in th garage.

I am not making this stuff up, Like I said, this all came from my friends who just moved over from there.
