ok guys i have an xbox 360 and ps3 which i have had on a 20" SD Television. I want a new LCD for my room and am think of getting the Sony KDL40V3000. It is full HD but i was also thinking of getting the Samsung LE37A456. I told by my friend full HD would make much difference with HD Ready .Im hoping a 40" wouldn't be too big in my bedroom. But Others Told me Vice Versa. So im looking for your guys opinion??

The general rule of thumb is that you won't really notice the difference between HD Ready and Full HD on sets smaller than 50 inch...

50":O:O jes i was full sure a 40" would see a good difference. May go for the 37" samsung, There is two of them. a HD Ready or Full HD. If there is no difference then i suppose a HD ready will do. Is the Samsung LE37A456 a good Tv??

Will Blu-Ray still look good on HD Ready ??

You won't notice the difference between HD Ready 720p and Full HD 1080P with Blurays on anything below about 130inches of Projection screen. You will notice the difference on a 42in screen............if you are sitting less than 2ft away....but who does that.

You may however notice a difference in games but are PS3 games in 1080p or are they mostly 720p. Maybe someone else can answer that. If most games are 720p then I wouldn't bother with full HD 1080p screens.

If you ever intend to use the screen as a computer monitor than definately get 1080p. A 720p desktop is very cramped.

Put it this way. Most of my family still live at home. (Waiting for the housing market to hit rock bottom :D ). We are all moving to a big Victorian house inherited from Late grandparents. We will be investing heavily in TV's and Home Cinema gear for the new house. We will have a dedicated Home Cinema room that can accomodate a much bigger projection screen than we have now. Probably about 130in. Thus we will be replacing our 720p Projector with a 1080p one because the new screen size warrents it. If we were keeping our current sized screen our 720p projector would do.

The kitchen and sitting room plasmas are 720p and we will not be upgrading these. No need.

One of the brothers new rooms is tight on space in the new house and thus to save space, he is getting a 40inch 1080p LCD. Not because he needs it for Bluray (which from his bed on the opposite wall would look just as good if it was 720p) but because the screen will double up as a monitor for his PC. Thats where 1080p will come in handy for him.

Cheers Lad, But i would be using it as a pc moniter, maybe connecting the laptop the very odd time to watch a movie or stuff like that.

I was offered a Toshiba 373035( i think thats the model) and upscaling dvd player for €500 from mate. Its 6 months old he said. Is that a good offer.???

I think a 37" would be perfect for my bedroom. Kinda small bedroom. Prob the HD Ready Smasumng one. Where is the cheapest spot to get a 37" Tv?? I know someone in Dixions so I can get a 10% discount in either PC World/Currys/Dixions?

Does the xbox 360 & PS3 not automatically upscale DVDs?

So why buy an upscaling DVD player?

That being the case , then you want 1080p , because the screen real estate on a 720 set is incredibly frustrating to work with. You'd be forever scrolling.

Most discussions on 1080p v 720p dont take into account that simple fact because most discussions are really about will you notice the difference while watching movies.

The problem with that viewing chart is that is assumes perfect transmissions , which dont exist , the upshot being , that even on a 32 inch screen , the benefits of HD material are clearly visible ,

Most channels broadcast on low bitrates , very few on quality high bitrates , so the viewing distance chart is more or less meaningless , as anyone with a 32 inch flat panel will tell you.

My first flat panel screen was small , and according to the above chart , it was pointless to get skyHD because I wouldnt notice it , the truth is that skyHD was hugely impressive and very very noticable ... and that goes for everyone who seen the set.

Likewise with blu ray material , and the same goes for my new 42 inch panny , clearly the chart is based on false assumptions , as the difference between 1080p and 720p material is very noticeable.

The chart says that you'll notice the difference on a 32" set.
But it also tells you what the optimim sizes/distances are for the different levels of HD.

Yes, you are absolutely right. That chart should not be used to determine whether a HD signal on a certain screen size will look better than SD. It almost always will, not because of the resolution but because of the clearer less compressed image. Just as how DVD looks better than broadcast SD.

However there is merit in the chart to show that with a perfect HD signal, 1080p may not look better than 720p at certain sizes/distances.

    Ix.

You will notice a differance with HD discs or 1080p content, or games at that resolution, especially if you're close to the screen. For DVD's or downloaded videos 720p is more than enough. @40 inches resolution won't make that big a differance, noticable but its not going to make a movie look crap just because the tv only does 720p
