Reception after splitter

I've moved house and the previous owners only had 1 room connected (NTL)
In my previous place we had 2 rooms connected with the small silver ntl pace box for each room. They told me to take the boxes with us.

As the previous owners had only 1 room connected I decided to do the others myself (box on the side of house). I got one of these qq70.jpg.
Originally there was only 1 direct connection to the NTL feed cable (the other 3 cables were bare (i.e. no connections on the cables)

Connected up the splitter and then the 4 cables (2 of which there are no visible connection points for in the house? Not even blank wall plates).

After I did it the reception on most the discovery channels & sky news went all blocky, other channels are fine. I disconnected the connections I can't find the ends of & only left the 2 for the ones I need, still the same.

Am I using the right splitter?
PS my NTL BB is working perfectly
Apologies for the long post :o
