External Blu Ray burner questions

I'm thinking of buying an external blu ray burner. I've seen this one on komplett.ie and it looks really good. I've got a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

Any thoughts on the blu ray burner above?

Does anyone have a good place that sells blu ray discs, komplett charge about €15/disc

How long would it take to transfer 25GB to a disc? I've got a 2.33ghz dual core laptop with 2GB ram.

Is it possible to convert .mkv video files into a format that I could write onto a blu ray and play in my PS3?

Does anyone know any other external blu ray burners on the market that they could recommend?

I'd try and get one with Blu-ray only. You are paying a premium for the HDDVD support which is dead and buried!

http://svp.co.uk/ aren't too bad for disks.

USB can only write at 24MB/sec at its fastest
so ideally you would be looking at around 20 minutes per disk.

I don't know why anyone would bother with a blue ray burner
to be honest. They are still too expensive.

Cant you hook up external hard drives to the PS3 ? or is
there still the problem with .mkv files ?

The PS3 can only read Fat32 formatted external hard drives. This means you can't have a file > 4GB in size (which can rule out some HD-rip mkv files).

Does that limit you to 32gig partitions also ?

Is it compatible with NAS drives ?

not sure about the 32GB limit, AFAIK this is just a windows formatting limitation that can be gotten around using a utility called 'swissknife'.

As for NAS, if the NAS unit supports DLNP then it will show up in the ps3 automatically.

If you want to wire the NAS to the ps3, I don't know if NAS boxes has usb connectivity. But if the NAS has this ability, then you are back to your above problem of the Ps3 only reading fat32 external disks (over usb)

I can't get .mkv files to work properly on the PS3. Do you know can these be burnt to the bluray and played then on the PS3?
