Bring loads of money for starters, its far from a cheap city (as I expected it to be).

If you get a taxi state where you want to go and ask for the price before you get in.

Although pricey for drinks, exclusive places like the skyline bar in Hotel Latvija and club essential around the corner are good spots for nightlife. Cheaper places are quite dodgy and drug ridden as we found out and not that much in the difference.

Avoid walking tours. There are bloody no good walking tours in Riga.

have been there and a few mates have been there, few bad tales, but i found it grand, i kept out of trouble and i was fine, some of me mates werent though. but, its no different to any large city to be honest.

    do -

stay in franks hostel, voted amongest the best in the world over the last few years. very cheap and class facilities. some cracking talent working there too.

    dont -

go anywhere on your own, esp take money out of bank machines at night time (few of me friends got mugged)

act the boll*x, mate of mine got beaten up by bouncers over nothing.

mess about with the locals. they are depressed at times.

Made it back all in one piece… Must say it is one of the most expensive places I’ve ever been.

Actually stayed in Hotel Latvija and happened to frequent club essential and must say really enjoyed it!

It’s like any city, if you go to the grotty bars/clubs you are bound to get burnt!

So the question, would I recommend Riga? Yes and No! I was banker for the trip and it was hard work! Always had to ask for change and be careful of establishments we entered.

Anyone looking for more infor please feel free to PM me!

I've been to Riga a good few times

never had any problems with bouncers and/or muggings - or heard of any

taxi driver can be a bit fast etc - but thats the norm there I guess, the fares are cheap once you agree before hand

It is an expensive place but I've found eating out great value

And i dunno if I would call the people depressed, some have had a bad time (older generation) but most just seem reserved, it is a different culture and all that . I've found people helpful when I needed them to be

And the park areas each side of the liberty statue - great places to relax

The only thing i don't like about Riga is it being a stage destination to be honest. And would be nice if cheaper but there ya go. Oh yea and "some " of the people on the flights over

Jeez, sounds like the prices have gone way up since I was there two years ago. But then I wasn't on a stag :o

Sky Bar in Hotel Latvija, nice views but way overhyped. Best hits of Whitney Huston on a loop anyone? :D

Was there last week. Average price for a beer was between €2 and €2.50. Taxi men were fine (we thought we were in for trouble when one had his meter covered - ended up paying 11 lat from the airport (for 4 people) which was fine and about standard).

Food was good, old town was lovely, didn't go into nightclubs myself but a fair few I know did and no problems whatsover.

Stayed in the Garden Palace hotel which in a perfect location. Would recommend to anyone. Didn't go for a stag either...

I can't believe that no-one has mentioned the prossies. It seemed to me that it is the biggest industry in Riga. The hotel that we stayed in had a steady line of them coming in and out at all hours. Not that I partook in such activities of course.
