Overstay in US in 1986, problem getting back in

My father overstayed his visa in 1986 by 5 months, never notified of a ban. Went back for a holiday in 1998 and nothing was said to him, we are going on a 5 day trip to New York in August but because of the overstay in 86 he has been advised to apply for a visa, should there be any problem in getting the visa? Any advice…

There might be. There might not be. You won't know until you apply. Even if you get it you can still be turned away at US Immigration at the airport.
