    Hello

I heard of websites with stock images and photos that you can buy, usually fairly cheap for one use or that. I was wondering can you buy photos, with full copyright and, Where and roughly how much? I was looking to start a small webpage and want to know, would I be able to buy a photo of a place in America and claim it as my own, copyrighted. But not claiming to have taken the picture, Just to display on my webpage.

    Thanks very much :)

you can probably buy a licence to use the photograph on your site for a given period of time. You will not own the copyright outright.

As to how much, I don't know. I don't deal with them.

Where? The photographer who took it. They're the people you need to talk to...

challengemaster, there are stock sites, yes, that act as an intermediary between the photographer and potential customers. Shutterstock is possibly an option. If I look very hard, I can probably find the names of a couple of others buried somewhere in my files.

So he does not necessarily need to deal with the photographer, but he does need to understand that he is unlikely to get the full copyright, only a licence to use. I think most people would agree that this is fair enough.

True Calina, but if he wants full copyright then his best bet would be to try the photographer. Might be easier to talk with them than a stock photo site..

Stock photo sites are the other option indeed, but like you said, doubtful he'll get what he's looking for

The issue is he doesn't need full copyright.

sounds like the op wants to purchase exclusive usage rights... expensive and overkill on the web.

    cool thanks,

The idea of the website is to promote my work, and to improve customer service and that, surely I couldnt use a bought photo, for use on my page... as an example of my work, I wouldnt actually mention it was taken by me, but it would be implied.. Will I be able to do this?

Thansk for the replies btw :)

yes, expensive is another thing... so "renting" a photo is probably better, but under the conditions am I allowed to use shutterstock images for that purpose?

Okay, without wanting to get into a discussion of the ethics of it all, I think this is wrong. If the work you are trying to promote is photography work, then I think it is probably not possible to get a licence where you can imply you took the photograph without actually stating it.

If I were sending photographs to a stock agency I would go ballistic if they issued a licence that allowed you to do this with one of my photographs.

Commercial usage licences are available but this uhem...this sounds just wrong to me.

What's the point? Someone comes along and asks you to get a nice landscape like you have on your site, and you're not able to get it?

I agree with whyulittle the money you'd pay for this would be alot and you're showing off someone elses image! If you havn't got the skill to shoot a photo like that yet don't let your website imply you can.If you have save the money you would be paying for full copyright and book a few days in some area with great landscapes and shoot them

I don't think it's a case of can't take the photograph so much as lacks the opportunity right now.

I can't say I blame him on that front.

Anyone putting any photo anywhere on the internet takes that very same risk. The same risk putting images on your own website.
