    Hi

I use my work one at present for everything. Problem is it is extremely slow and now that Lightroom is on it it's ceased almost to a walk when I use LR which is very annoying. It doesn't lock up or anything but I don't think it's powerful enough to be able to run a lot of apps together.

Anyway, I want to get a laptop to store all my pics on as well as be able to run LR and possibly Photoshop a little further down the line. I won't really be using it for much else, maybe a little Word and Excel and obviously browsing but apart from LR and PS there wouldn't be any heavy duty apps on it. This would surely do the job?

I don't want to spend too much as I have my eye on a lens as well at around the €500 mark so a grand all in is my limit.

I'm going to the US in September also. Would I be better off getting one there? I'm messing around with adaptors and stuff then I suppose and no service. Anyway, any advice appreciated.

What kind of config do you have at the moment? I bought an Advent laptop a couple of months ago and running fine the PhotoShop CS3 under Vista. It's a 17" wide screen 1.6 dualcore 2 Gig mem 160Gig HDD for near 600Eur:D (Dell have same config and same price BUT only @14" display :( )

The config on the work PC is 1.06GHz, 1.49 GB mem. It's fully loaded with VPN and other remote software so it's fairly slow.

I need a new one and something like what you have sounds like the job.

they are expensive in a side by side hardware comparison but run oh so smootly compared to a pc. that said if you are looking for somthing with a big screen the bigger pro macbooks are expensive alright.

my 17" vostro cost less than 1/3 of what a lesser powered macbook would have cost. It's so stupid. Also wtf@run smoother? I've 3 computers here, Vista, XP and Ubutnu linux. I've the three working together using synergy so i only need one mouse/keyboard, and they never crash.. infact the only times they're off is when im in another country, or I turn them off/reboot for some other reason (software install etc). Seems pretty smooth to me..

    run smoother my backside!!

in the past I would agree but not now.

granted pc's have tended to require more RAM than their MAC counterparts for optimal performance but providing you are using an appropriately specced machine there are no discernable differences whatsoever between the two. This is an old wives tale from the pro MAC people. (I use both so have no particular preference)

Stay well clear of Advent I had four of them..
Why 4 ? they were all replacments for each other..

That was a few years ago, but a friend got one about 4 months ago... the battery is now dead... so they are not getting any better...

I now use Dell 17in models. and in fact will be posting a thread looking for another one..
Mac is great, but dont write off PC based laptops..
