Operating IMAP account through 2 outgoing servers?

I want to switch over my POP3 account to IMAP and then have it set-up on my iPhone as well as my laptop. However, I also use 3 Mobile Broadband when out of the office and I have to send emails through 3's outgoing smtp servers or it won't work.

My question is, if I send emails through 3's servers and my own hosting servers intermittently, will this effect the IMAP account. In other words, will the IMAP still register the changes (sent items, replies, etc.)?

Some email clients (eg. Thunderbird) can be configured to copy mail being sent to the 'Sent' folder on an IMAP server. If this is available on the iPhone email client, it will solve your problem.

Other options may be available, depending on your setup (eg. LEMONADE extensions for IMAP, relay through a smarthost using ports other than 25 with copies routed to 'Sent' on IMAP, etc.)

Unless you're using Gmail IMAP, Mail.app, Accounts, Mail Behaviors, Sent, 'Store sent messages on the server' is what you want:

    Ah perfect!

So what you're saying is, regardless of what outgoing server I use to send the mail, once it goes into my 'Sent' folder in Apple Mail it will upload itself to my IMAP server?

Yes, with 'Store sent messages on the server' ticked, it should store copies of any mail you send from this account in the Sent folder on your IMAP server. You may want to configure your desktop machines to do the same (if they are not already doing this).
