Right laptop GPU go fried there a few months back.
I just got around to getting and fitting the new card now.

the computer is all up and running now and everything seems to be ok. but im just concerned as i dont know why the last one blew.

Any diagnostic programs out there that can make sure everything is ok.

its an inspiron 8500 just in case that matters

Only thing you can do is stress testing really. Orthos is good for CPU/RAM stress testing, dunno about graphics really. I guess you could run 3DMark or something similar in a loop for a few hours. There's GeoForms for nvidia cards too, but I'm sure if I could recommend it as it has crashed on my (apparently perfectly stable) system.
