Weight Loss Surgery

Nowadays any weight-loss story that involves losing 3 stone or more seems to have been achieved through the “miracle” of bariatric (or weight loss) surgery. Gastric Bypass, Lap Band, even Stomach Stapling comes under the heading, although has been around a lot longer. People don’t seem to see all the risks that are involved. Only now are the horror stories starting to filter through of dying on the operating table and dying within a few days due to complications.

Overweight and obese people are being promised a permanent solution. And that’s just not true. Plenty of people who have had one of these operations have gone on to gain the weight back. Usually because they haven’t addressed the actual reason they were overeating in the first place.

What is your opinion on bariatric surgery? Is it a welcome option for overweight and obese people? Or does it need to be regulated a lot more? Perhaps only preformed as a last resort?

Only as a last resort or for health reasons do i believe these operations should be performed!! Losing weight by yourself is more fulfilling and probably less painful and cheaper. This is just an option for people who are too lazy to put the work into it if they are not using it for genuine health reasons.

A lot of celebrities are saying they lost the weight naturally by exercising and eating healthy, But they actually got surgery done. Your one Jade Goody bringing out a fitness video after getting surgery and lying about her weight lose.

I would advise anyone to stay away from surgery, unless they are going to die and require it, Its much safer to loose fat naturally.

Fatties take up way too much room. If we take enough out of them we could build new people with it hence solving the dwindling population problem our planet is experiencing.

You can't educate people who don't want to listen. The fact is, you don't balloon to 30+ stone overnight. It takes years and years of overeating, lack of proper exercise and no willpower.

What really galls me is the success stories on TV. They clearly overeat even with a camera on them. They complain about how its hard to lose weight while they tuck into a dinner that's twice the size of a normal portion topped up with a pint of fizzy drinks. And they say surgery is the only option.

I have yet to see a single one of these programs about stomach stapling point out that a patient who refuses to change their diet is capable of returning their stomach to its previous size. And quite a few do.

I can leave tihs here, or I can clean it up and move it to humanities.
    Your choice, OP.

Firstly I would like to point out that no one goes into this surgery blind. I have just had a gastric bypass. Mine was more preventative since, being fat runs in my family. But, if you think seeing your child scared that you'll die when visiting you was fun, then think again. I am tired of people dogging this surgery. Your not the one who'll have to watch every thing you eat and drink at the risk of dumping. however, through all that I feel blessed.I can go swimming with my son and, to the gym. I can get into a size 14-16 again and not have to wear a duvet. I'm likely to live longer to. I would suggest that if yo go into it. go in with your eyes wide open. If you have it done on the NHS you have to jump through 18 months of psycological hoops and untold appointments. this one and that one prodding at you. And the aftercare is handy too. we can get hold of a medic 24 hrs a day.

This is not for the light hearted. in the first few weeks you will go to some dark corners of your mind. wondering if you did the right thing. scared that you may die as your body adapts. however, three months on and, three stone lighter am i glad i did it...HELLL YEAH!!!!!!

I used to be chubbs mc chubberson when I was about 13 years old, I was 16 stone at my peak. Got down to 12.5 but always had a bit more to go. My weight has fluctuated quite a bit and I even went back up to about 15 stone in Jan 2007, although older and taller so not "fat" then, just overweight.

I'm down to about 13.5 again but I think I could lose another 1.5/2 stone of fat and put on muscle. I've been battling with my weight since I've been about 8 years old, well, from 8-13ish I just ate and ate and didn't really think about it, but from 13/14 to now (10 years) I've been trying to lose weight. It's very annoying and not just a case of "putting down the fork", if only it were that simple.

I have a massive sweet tooth and I looove my food. Luckily I have no temptation to drink and never do and when I eat, I eat healthy, but it takes a lot to fill me. When I was 12.5 stone, my lowest in years, I wasn't as aware of what was good and bad to eat. I'd eat white bread and everyday things like that without knowing about them. I'm a lot more knowledgeable now so I think I'm on a steady decline weight wise. Get the odd bad day but overall I eat very well and I can now satisfy that sweet tooth with very healthy alternatives that taste a million times better than the fake crap in shops I used to crave.

It's been a long journey and has been very difficult but I think if I can reach my goal, I'll be a lot more satisfied and will find it much easier to maintain the desired weight. It was annoying to get so far (to 12.5 stone) and then go back to 15, but now I think I'll keep it off once I get to a weight I'm happy with. I think if I had surgery, I'd still need to sort my mind out. And I may be thin (temporarily?) but I know I wouldn't be healthy. I'm quite confident now that I'm very healthy. I just need to excercise more and the weight will probably fall off. It's all to do with training your mind and I don't think surgery will achieve that. (With me anyway)
