got a friends computer to fix today, but it looks like the pc is dead.

he had a lightening strike a few weeks back, gave it to a shop to fix. they said it was the dial up modem causing the problem.

so they replaced it. he brought it home and still wouldnt work.

i had a look at it for the last hour or 2 and its dead. its a 7 year old dell.

what he wants to do is get all the info off the harddrive.
ive stuck it into mine, but i dont think my pc likes it.

    it keeps bsod!

the harddrive seems fine as it shows up when if i try to install windows. and also in the bios.

im gonna stick it into another machine later but i was thinking there are user passwords on xp. will i be able to access the info?

Why not take it back to the shop? Seems like they felt they had fixed the issue but they clearly haven't. Did your mate get charged for the repair?

thanks khannie. im sorting it now.

mordeith, the shop is n waterford. they charged 190 euro for the work they did. my m8's insurance was to pay for it. but obviously snce the shop said its working, they wont now.

so he gave it to me to fix, draw up a letter saying whats wrong with it, and then he can claim off his insurance for the cost of the orinial repair to the shop, and what ever else i decide to charge.
