    Hi Guys,

    I have a dell 6400 laptop with a mini firwire connection the 4 pin . I have a external harddrive with a f400 connection the 6 pin.

I was going to buy a 6pin to 4 pin cable.

My question is Will this work.

    Yes.

Not quite - if your external drive is firewire-powered, it won't work as those 4-pin plugs don't supply power (that's the other two pins on the six-pin plug.)
If your external drive has its own PSU, that's fine.
