i'm setting up a studio for model shoots and I’m just wondering what sort of flash strobe and lighting equipment would I need.
If you could link to some site that sells kits that would be great

How big is the studio? for most work I use Elinchrom D-Lite 4's and these work really well and have a quick recycle and digital controls to go up and down in power.
    They are the second set

I also use Elinchrome lights (400BX & 600RX heads) and find them great. www.barkerphotographic.ie have the full range but I know Gunns can also get them.

Cant comment on the item but can on the seller.
The seller in question is excellent and the postal time is fast.

Keep in mind its 47 sterling postage. and this seller wont negotiate !

Well, lights are only the start of it all, you've got to consider how you're going to use the light!

Do you've any examples of the lighting you want to get?

you remind me to my wife... :D
    probably you're right
that's why I'd go for something cheap

I hope your wife is better looking. :D

Al is right though. Better to know what you'll be doing with the lights, how you'll use them, position them, what subjects you'll photograph, what backgrounds etc.

Cheap can be a very good way to start and try things out.

Oh, please don't get me started. LOL.

I've never had a wife - never made that mistake.

Jesus, even I hope your wife is better looking :p

Well, what I mean by how you're going to use the light, I mean, check out different studio photos you like - Is it soft or hard light you want to go for? Will umbrellas or a softbox work better for you? Snoots or normal heads?

As I said, post some examples here and I'll let you know!

TBH I've had one (yes, 1) photoshoot in studio so far
2 lights at the sides with some metal "shades" and one more with a softbox on the front
    I did like the results
I have to shoot some tango dancers at their place in a couple of months at a tango event and a friend said to have studio lights as fill light will make the room much more alive than what I can get off my speedlight(s)
also, I was counting on setting a corner in that dancing room with some background to take tango posing pictures (I don't like the posing part of it but that's what they want)

in short, I wish I had the knowledge and/or experience to answer you

    That ebay kit looks good.
I’m going to be shooting models on various backdrops, would that kit be suitable for such shoots.

Not trying to sound like a d**k here or anything, but I'm wondering if you're opening up your own studio why would you be askign about the quality of lights etc? Surely you have experience in studio and know what you've used before, what works, what doesn't. Again I'm not looking to rain on your parade by the way.

It's supposed to be summer.

    aha! that's my point
I'm not trying to set up a studio
just trying to gain experience on lighting equipment
my family will be my models from now on
the only for real (real but not that much "on the money") will be on that tango meeting I was talking about, still I'll take it as a learning exercise

what other way I'll have to KNOW what I need? shaddowing a pro or paying to rent a studio for the sake of learning?

I think you might be mixing up a "studio" with a Business !

    *Edit,
I "quoted" from page one, just realised the OP posted above.. ;)

So you're not trying to set up a studio even though in your very first post you say

"i'm setting up a studio for model shoots and I’m just wondering what sort of flash strobe and lighting equipment would I need".

    Confusing.

Also I don't know if you're being sarcastic about shadowing a pro/renting a studio but yeah, that would be a good idea.

Er, not really RCN, anyone can set up a studio, and anyone can be 'your model' - It dosn't mean you're going into business, nor going to be making profit out of it.

I know at least 7 or 8 people with a studio set up in their house, purely because they like shooting studio shots!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

It never hurts to rent out a studio for an hour or two, just to get the feel of studio lights and shooting under them.

At least then you'll have a better idea of what you want, and can budget for that.

It might save you hassle and money in the long run.

    hi guys,

Just wanted to pick up this thread again. I am going to be doing some studio work soon, and for the moment, I really can't afford to spend 700 or so euro on equipment.

I was interested in what people thought about the ebay option. I never bought anything on ebay, so I am a bit hesitant. This is a cheap option, and has all I need to get started

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200261183878&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=190234442669&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget&_trksid=p284.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%252BIA%26itu%3DIA%252BUCI%26otn%3D4%26ps%3D42

Anyway - the room is quite dark, and will be shot in the evening. The models are modeling lingerie - so I am looking for a soft flattering tones.

Any ideas? I would be interested in hearing how the initial poster of the thread got on with his purchase.

    thanks!
