Where might I find legal details on a private, Sports Club formation?

    How do all,

Myself and others want to start a private sports club (lawn bowls for instance) and we don't want to have young'uns usurping us at an AGM, where might I find info on general club formation questions.
Perhaps a company setup may be more appropriate for us. We want to setup a club because of public liability and committee liability insurance and to compete in other clubs etc. I can find no info at national umbrella organisation level, they instruct that it's up to indiviual clubs how they administer themselves. We wouldn't be applying for grants or the like.

I would have questions such as-

    1. "Under Civil Law must the executive committees of club put themselves forward for re-election every year at an Annual General Meeting even if their Club Constitution does no specifically require it ?"

    1. "Under Civil Law, are there any restrictions on what an Annual General Meeting can do in relation to a Club ?"
Perhaps there is no definition of a club and committees can make up their constitution as they please?

Any links to further info would be great. Also anyone's experience with private or invitational type club setup would be interesting to hear.

    Thank you,

    Flynn

As I understand it, if it's a private club, not only can you make up any rules you like (apart from the obvious "the chairman is permitted to rob two banks per year" kind of thing), but you don't have to follow them either.

If you keep it as a striclty private club according to your own constitution then you can essentially do what you want. For liability reasons a massive amount of clubs are incorporated companies limited by guarantee. If you decide to incorporate then you obviously come under the remit of the Companies Acts as amended.
