Ok so I bought a pair of white runners last week that I managed to turn to **** at the weekend walking across a field locked. Part is leather and part is material, so I'm wondering how best to get the muck out of the material part. Would the washing machine be a good idea? Or will that ruin the shoes/washing machine?
    Any ideas welcome like

You could try brushing them with a stiff brush when the muck is completely dry, then using soapy water and a toothbrush on the fabric part (that tube of liquid detergent for handwashing clothes on holiday rinses very easily so it's great for this kind of job).
If all that fails, you might have to put them in the washing machine in a pillowcase if it's either that or bin them.
