    Hi all,

I know there are a lot of posts with regard to which camera to get so I am sorry if I am dulling anyone. I'm not long in photography and I have been giving a few recommendations but I love the camera I have also but being a Konica Minolta I am sure that, hard as it is to get equipment now, it is going to get harder since they sold up!

    My camera is a 5d

What I love about it -
it has ALL the functions M S A P auto portrait sports landscape night
the size, I dont want anything too big, it's a nice comfy fit

What more I need or want -
I have 3 frames per sec on contiuous, I want more
higher pixel this is only 6mil

The problem I am having is I don't want to sacrifice anything on this! I like the idea that it already has a fill flash setting so no need to mess around with it, loads of iso to choose from and all the functions.

Recommendations have been mainly canon, 40d 400d and 450d, all of these seem still to be 3 per second. I saw someone with a Nikon d3 and wow I would sacrifice the size for such a responsive camera but I ain't got that cash.

So overwhelm me with your recommendations please:D:D:D:D:D:D

    nikon d700?
lenses can be sold and new ones can be bought, not a problem with that (I've done it myself, more than once)

Since you already have some Minolta lenses, have you considered the Sony A700? Sony's cameras can take Minolta lenses, as they have the same mount, seeing as how Sony were the ones who bought Minolta out.

It also has a 5fps continuous shooting mode, so should fit your needs in that department.

I second leohoju, the Sony a100 took the body of the maxxum 5d and updated it a little and the a700 is based slightly on the maxxum 7d, and it's the same mount so all your existing lenses will work.

Try them out, you should be able to get an a100 cheaply enough as it's being phased out, the a700 is a great camera but there's also the a350.

    Failing that...

There are plenty of good DSLR's about from Olympus, Pentax and some other companies that I don't know too well ;) namely Nikon and Canon

Canon 40D is 6.5 fps, 10.1mp camera. A very very good body to use.

    This should suit your needs.

Just out of curiosity, how big are you printing your images to need more than 6mp?? Large poster? A 4mp camera should be well able to print A1 size just fine.

The Minolta 5D is what smelltheglove is referring to. Came out in 2005 some time.

Thats correct together with Paulw correction. A picture in connection of 40D's speed: 49BD9257A5CD4D1CB8211E990F3171A6.jpg
Don't forget: 5D is a full frame camera as well as 1Ds Mark II.

When i read this i though the op was upgrading from a 5D!
I think after seeing your photos you need good fps so the canon 40D is good.
Also handles noise better then the 350D 400D

Upg from 5D??? Why? Only the speed? Never mind! Or not enough the 6 Mpix? One more time, the 5D is a full frame camera that not comparable with an APS-C format 6M pix! If do you have same extra money or have you won on the lotto then 1Ds Mark II your way but I think so too expensive for an amateur.
I have an old 20D only and enough for me. I never had any situation when I needed higher spec. camera. I have problems with the lenses only, also finding a good quality but not expensive normal zoom.

On looking back through the canons I realised that yes some of them are 6fps, for some reason my first point of research had this printed wrong!

I will research the Sonys too as I love my camera so much, it's just the right one for me, but it is dated, at 6m mega pixels it gets overshadowed by so many others, I find people constantly saying, oh that's an old camera!

It really is basically the convenience of a canon or nikon that attracts me though, it is so easy to pick up equipment second hand and cheap quickly whereas I find myself constantly searching for equipment for this. I will keep it though, as a working photographer I will need a fall back camera anyway.

I just found that covering a boxing match I missed so many moments as it didn't respond as much as I wanted it too.

Thanks for the advice, I've had a few recommend the 40d so I may start to look into that.

P.S. guys I haven't uploaded any of my pics here yet as I am overwhelmed by all of yours, amazing, I'm such an amateur in comparison! Richard did see some though!

Sorry sagitarius we must have posted at same time, alot of people think I'm referring to a nikon, it's actually a knoica minolts 5d - huge huge difference!

I wish I had one of those super cameras though so if you win the lotto remember me please!:D:D:D:D

I wouldn't worry about that. We're almost all amateurs on here, and just do it for the enjoyment. Feel free to join in and post your photos. You certainly shouldn't feel intimidated on boards.

I have a Canon 40D and it's a brilliant camera. Nice body to hold, great reaction, nice 6.5fps, 10.1mp, loads of functions and features, and a brilliant price too. Well worth considering.

Paul I love your site - wow, your sports are amazing.

I only ever intended on working on family occassions etc as it's all I did as an amateur and loved it. I was asked to do an event that pictures were being sent to the herald for and was nervous as hell so I agreed to take pics at a friends boxing fight night to calm my nerves for the following night.

I've been bitten by the bug as I loved it - great fun, very hard work but great fun. I'll be brave and attach an image here for you to see, you will prob think it's brutal but hey, we'll all learn. I'm attaching my watermarked version as it's all i have a code for at the mo.

    No problem:cool:
Yes of course a verry huge diff between Minolta 5D and Canon Eos-5D it's remarkable:D

That's a good boxing image you have there. Nice colour and detail. No major action in it, but you certainly know what's going on.

Practice, practice, practice is all you can do. Confidence will come from that.

You might be better off geting a 30D only 1.5 fps in the difference and nothing major changed other than live view i think,
Plus you'll get one much cheaper than a 40D and you'll get extras maybe
Then you'll have more money for glass think i saw one over of photography ireland for €475 with batterygrip

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

I'm not as proud of my pure action shots. You'll prob see why from this.

    7343170541a8237482030l.jpg

I need faster lenses too though so that will prob help when I upgrade.

Again lotto winners remember me, and thanks guys for the advice!:D

Actually, the 40D is a bit more of a step up from the 30D than you think. 1.5 fps makes a good difference. It also has more features like spot metering, liveview, better AF, and more. I think the 40d is very much worth the difference in price over the 30D. I upgraded from the 20D to the 40D and was very impressed.

As for fast glass, you seem to be right at ring side, so a nice 50mm f/1.4 lens would go down well - fast, sharp and very well priced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

Yeah unfortunately all I have is a 5.6 so I'm just recently realising that this may be where my lighting issue comes from also.

I was lucky enough to be allowed at ringside, they thought I was shooting for the papers or something:D:D:D

The ropes did over expose though!

I suppose for long term I don't mind spending the extra few quid on a higher spec, as few as events like this may be it will be worth it for the extra few shots!

The 30D has spot meter ing i think?I remember reading on a forum that 20D users were asking if they could get the firmware off a 30D for the spot memetering?

    Someday i'll upgrade to a 40D from a 20D :D

The 30D has spot metering or not? "35 area Eval, Center weighted, Partial, Spot" <-This from 30D datasheet
Is different between spot metering and spot metering! See the datasheets:
    20D have 9% of viewfinder, 30D (much smaller) 3.5% and at 40D have selectable 9% or 3.5%!
