Just got the Nokia 6500 slide and Im wondering how long do I have to let it charge out of the box?

I read somewhere its better to use the current battery life thats on the phone and then when it goes dead to fully charge it to prolong battery life?
Not sure how correct that it tbh.

New phones now dont suffer from memory effect so can be charged any time for as long or as short as you like. It is said though that the new battery needs a few charges before reaching optimum performance.

Where do you guys get this information from? I've asked 2 networks and 3 major manufacturers and each one has referred me to the user manual - which does not mention it. i.e. nobody knows or care - with me therefore concluding it makes no difference.

What is the basis for all these suggestions you guys are giving or are you just making up a random number of hours ?

Looks like I'm gonna have to send out a string of emails to the operators again and get some proper answers on this.

Actually I think that I will make it my business to clarify this with people here and people in stores around the country. There is too much fobbing off and picking numbers out of head going on.

Well I've whipped an email off to all 3 networks (I don't rate 3 as a network, their customer support will tell me to rub the battery on my jacket, and Tesco I don't see as being experienced enough) so we'll see what they say. Be interested to know what you come back with too.

And I bet Sarge will get another 3 and we'll have 6 different answers. I'll post here when I get a reply anyway.

I'm speaking from experience, since 2005 i've owned or used the following phones:

    nokia 6230i
    SE w800i
    SE w810i
    Nokia N70
    Nokia 6300
    SE k800i
    Nokia N95 8gb

and they all fully charge in 3-4 hours. most manuals state that a battery takes a couple of charges to reach its full strength, and with experience i've learned not to top a battery up (learned the hard way with the 6230i) some of the ones i still own i still get 3-4 days from a full charge. (except n95)

so for my part i'm not picking numbers out of thin air.

    1 response so far ...
    I said wrote:
Is there a standard amount of time that a new phone should be charged
for the first time it's used? Is there a standard procedure to
    follow?
    Does it make a difference?

If it's specific to various models could you please confirm for me on
    the following models:
    - Sony Ericsson k800i
    - Nokia e51
    - Nokia N95

Can you also provide a general overall indication?

I've checked with the various manufacturers and they say check the
manual. I've checked the manuals and there is no mention.
In responce to your question, the charging time of a battery has
changed dramaticly over the past few years, as it was you had to
leave the phone pluged in over night for the first time.
As the market improved so to did the charge times on the batteries so
the advise now for the new phones on the market, such as you have
requested information on, the advise would be to charge it up untill
it is fully charges and dont charge it again untill it turns itself
off from lack of power. Repeat this for the first 2-3 charges and as
you go on try not to place on charge while there is battery left on
the phone as this will reduce the life expectancy of the battery,
once you do the above the first 2-3 times tho you should have no
problems what so ever with the batteries.

    ...
For all types of phone, it is advisable and as also confirmed from our technical team that you use the new phone until the battery is completely discharged before you charge it for the 1st time.

There is no time duration for charging but once the battery is showing full charged it should be disconnected from the power source. This helps to prolong the life span of the battery.

The information that Vodafone and Meteor have advised so far is more accurate than the common misconception of charging a phone overnight. I personally use the below methods when charging my phones no matter what the manufacturer.

The Nokia 5500 manual advises the following:
    Charge the battery

Connect the charger to the wall socket. Connect the lead from the charger to the charger connector in the phone. If the battery is completely discharged, it may take a few minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made. The charging time depends on the charger and the battery used. Charging a BL-5B battery with the AC-3 charger takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes and with the AC-4 charger approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

    Charging and discharging

Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The full performance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk and standby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replace the battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, and recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device.

If a replacement battery is being used for the first time or if the battery has not been used for a prolonged period, it may be necessary to connect the charger then disconnect and reconnect it to begin charging the battery.

Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave a fully charged battery connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time.

If the battery is completely discharged, it may take a few minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made.

Good link Pansy - seems to contradict a lot of the conventional advice:
Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.)

    Do mobiles have "fuel guages"?
Batteries with fuel gauge (laptops) should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the pack down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.
