Hey everyone, A while back I inherited a D70 and I've been meaning to take it out for ages! I recently opened it up, blew the dust off and took it out for a shoot. I'm a total beginner to photography, so these are my first shots. They're really just me messing around with the settings and trying to get to know the technicalities of the camera!

All critique, commentary, advice and information is much appreciated :)

To me, it looks like you have dirt on your sensor or lens. Some dirt spots can be seen.

    1) the horizon isn't straight and it just feels weird with water not being level.
    2) Nice colours, but don't understand the dark top left corner. Kinda spoils the image.

    Just my view.

    1) yeah, wow, I know what you mean. I knew something wasn't right about it but I couldn't put my finger on it.

    2) The dark top left is the hud of the lens. I have the right hud attached to it, but I think I didn't have it on properly.

I think the dark spot might be on the filter, I'll be changing it soon so fingers crossed.

    Thanks for the comments :)

    I like the last one.
Perhaps if it had less in the foreground though?
That would bring the boats closer to the front of the frame.

You might want to get your sensor cleaned.
For now, you should be able to use the heal tool to remove the spots.

Sometimes it's only a dust spot, so a wipe with a microfibre cloth can do wonders. As long as the dust is not on the camera sensor. That's a bit more complex to clean.

#1: Was that taken at Terryland Castle, just off the Dyke Road?

It's funny actually, I wanted to get closer to take that shot but there was another photographer there at the time taking shots so I couldn't move in too close in case I ruined his shot :P

Yeah I might get a general maintenance job done on the camera. Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get that done and where would be best to send it? I didn't pay anything for the camera, so I don't mind spending a bit having it maintained.

    Really like the last one.

Can't decide if it would be better with the horizon fixed or not!

    Thanks :)

Yeah I do seem to have some horizon issues in the photos, don't I? :P

Well it's a learning experience and it's something I'll look out for from now on, so thanks for pointing it out :)

The Horizon could do with a shift in the last image. The Lamp Post in the centre of frame will be the guide for the amount.

As for sensor cleaning, there is a thread covering it Here It does look more like sensor dirt than on the filter to me.

Weidii - My first DSLR body was the D70S, so if you want some help to clean the sensor then PM me. Would be happy to assist.

I'll have a look at it to try to determine where the dust is. I'll probably PM you looking for assistance when I find it.

    Thanks alot :)

Last 2 seem over sharpened too me, others are not my style but if I had to pick #2 edges it over #3.

The program i used to touch them up is the basic nikon picture project. I don't own photoshop or anything like that.

That leads to another question actually, does anyone know of any free photoediting software out there?

I can't place #2 exactly, but #3 is up on the Dyke Road opposite the stadium. It wouldn't be fair for me to comment on the photos as I lived there for 25 years and I'm a little biased about what to expect from Terryland Castle.

Yeah, right again, you really must know the Dyke rd. well to recognise it by a few rocks and a fence! It's not the best place to take photos, but I had to start shooting before the red sky went dark. #2 is somewhere along the Dyke rd between the stadium and the castle too. I'd love to get a pic of the castle when it's foggy out, it looks amazing when you can't see the road behind it :)

Do you have any photos of that area yourself? I'd be curious to see what the Dyke rd looks like from someone elses perspective.

    Here's a quick link:

The whole area up the river on both banks is really fantastic if you have an eye for unusual compositions.

This is a good (free) alternative to photoshop - www.gimp.org... might take a bit of learning

If I see a little further it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants. Stick around here, most of what I've produced is because I've watched others here and surreptitiously stolen their work when no one was looking...wait, crap.

Yeah, this forum is surprisingly active.

Thanks for all the advice and comments, people. I've learned alot from this thread alone.
