I've seen Sigur Ros mentioned a shed load of times here, usually all positive things. Never heard much of their stuff. Where should i start?

Takk is probably their most accesible album then after that the album called (). Their new album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust is pretty good too but its a bit of a departure from the sound they are most well known and loved for. If after all that you like what your hearing then go and get all the other stuff like Ágætis byrjun , Hvarf-Heim etc

I reckon Ágætis byrjun is your best bet.

I'd second Ágætis byrjun, Sven-G-Englar is one of my favourites off that album.

Definitely start with Ágætis byrjun. Most people I know got into Sigur Ros through that album. If Sven-G-Englar doesn't grab you the first time you hear then they're not for you.

I can still remember the first time I heard it.

Agree with the above. Either AB or ( ) are perfect starters. Takk is good but a bit pedestrian for them and the new one isn't great.

I started with Ágætis byrjun and it blew me away.
I think it's the best start (excuse the pun)

As John said, Takk... is a little pedestrian, I haven't heard the new one though.
    Steer clear of Von

I really think Takk... is your best bet. It's not my favourite by any means, but it's their commercial breakthrough, hence it's got the accessible songs e.g Hoppipola.
My favourite is ( ), if you were willing to dedicate time and patience to ( ) or Agaetis Byrjun, it'd be great if you start there.

Cheers people, i just got Ágætis byrjun. I've to do a bit of driving tomorrow so i'll burn it to disc this evening and give it a good listen to while i'm travelling.

Sven-G-Englar has really stood out after the first listen, as somebody has already said.

    Thanks again.

I got into them through Takk, love the album but AB is defo my favourite. i love it on a long drive. They are so incredible i hate when people write them off as "Ad music".

I know they're playing EP, but anyone know if they're playing they'r own gig anytime soon?/
Got the new album today and after a first listen it hasnt doen much for me, they sound a lot more ordinary or something....but im sure it will grow

+1 on staying the hell away from Von.

Any of the rest of them and you'll get the vibe.

It will change your life forever!

If you like Sigur Rós you should also check out another Icelandic group called Múm. Especially their first two albums 'Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK' and 'Finally We Are No One'. They have a similar but different sound.

Yeah, I hate that too - I think Hoppípolla is the song most to blame there!
I'm willing to bet that almost every office in the world has played that over a montage of a team building exercise or some sh't :pac:

Von's not bad, it's not great but it's still a decent album.

Also check out the band Amiina. They're the four girls who play strings on Sigur Rós's albums and their own music is just as wonderful.

Ágætis byrjun is definitely the best album to start with. Its actually incredible. Then get (), and follow that up with Takk..
I havent heard the new album, mainly cause im afraid to. Ive heard alot of people say its not great, and for someone whos been a massive, massive, Ros fan since the early 2000's, i dont know if i could stand to see them become 'mediocre' :(

I definetely will. The strings on the album are unreal.

    Savage stuff!

The latest album is a real pain in the ass. The first few tracks are light and fluffy and they do this brilliantly - a whole album would have been a great aside to their body of work. But then it goes all mawkish and horrible and yes pedestrian. what a let down

I'd go for Hvarf-Heim. Hvarf being my preferred disc. But to be honest, all are phenomenal. Takk may be a bit commercial but it's still excellent music. Like the new one also (not typing it's name as I don't want my spellcheck to explode on me), is a bit of a departure but Gobbledigook grows on me the more and more I hear it.

Have to agree about the band Múm also. Similar sound but different. Going to go look up Amiina now also. I'm quiet curious.

Saw them 2 weeks ago in Belgium for the first time- one of the best gigs I've ever seen, roll on EP worth it just to see the perform, amazing stuff!!

I started with Takk... on a whim about a month ago and haven't looked back. I'm now digging into Agaetis Byrjun and Hvarf/Hiem (I'm very likely to have made lots of you wince there by mis-spelling an album name). It's taking me longer to get into them, but in my experience that's all the better; I'm all about the slow burners.

    Festival is an amazing song

Meh, it sounds like Coldplay or something. Listen to the new one and the previous ones back to back and tell me how they compare.
