Id recommend you start taking glucosamine and cod liver oil for the joints, if you suffer with stiff or painful joints you wont know yourself after a few months..., Ive been taking it for a few years now as i do a lot of running and the aul "prevention is better than cure" springs to mind, I find it great stuff

I started taking glucosamine and chondroitin in April last as joints especially knees weren't great. Not a bother since
I also take Cod Liver oil straight from the bottle. Nothing like it first thing in the morning!

+1. I take glucosamine and chondroitin too. I also take garlic tablets and a multivitamin tablet a few times during the year.

Get your supplements in boots as you'll get the 3 for 2 offer which will save you a few quid. Glucosamine is quite expensive. Make sure it has chondroitin as apparently it activates the glucosamine or so I've been told.

Lidl sell 30 Glucosamine sulphate tablets for 2 euro. Does anybody else use these ? I've been taking them myself but have yet to look into if there are any difference between the cheap and dearer brands.

I also take iron, cod liver oil and flaxseed oil.

thanks for that. The article mentions a Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial. The key results of that analysis were

    * Participants taking the positive control, celecoxib, experienced statistically significant pain relief versus placebo--about 70 percent of those taking celecoxib had a 20 percent or greater reduction in pain versus about 60 percent for placebo.
    * Overall, there were no significant differences between the other treatments tested and placebo.
    * For a subset of participants with moderate-to-severe pain, glucosamine combined with chondroitin sulfate provided statistically significant pain relief compared with placebo--about 79 percent had a 20 percent or greater reduction in pain versus about 54 percent for placebo. According to the researchers, because of the small size of this subgroup these findings should be considered preliminary and need to be confirmed in further studies.
    * For participants in the mild pain subset, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate together or alone did not provide statistically significant pain relief.

The full report is available http://nccam.nih.gov/research/results/gait/qa.htm#c1

So, is that study suggesting that it's unproven that taking Glucosamine/Chondroitin has no more benefit as a preventative measure than taking cod liver oil?

I don't take any supplements myself, but have considered starting on cod liver oil.

They were comparing it to a prescription drug (celecoxib) used for treating arthritis .

For the glucosamine they did see improvement in the people who had moderate pain but say their sample size is too small to be certain.

    Hi all

I was just wondering is there many people running with arthritis now where the prevention is too late and now it's damage limitation time!

I ask because I'm a 34 year old male diagnosed with arthritis in my hip a couple of years ago when football was my sport. I now run (probably stupidly) and had ideas in my head to do the marathon this year.

I am training accordingly and am going with the (again probably stupid) idea that I would love to do the marathon before my hip gets too bad in years to come. I try to run as much on grass as I can but can feel the hip badly after certain runs (especially on the road).

Any advice would be appreciated and I hope I'm not hijacking this thread in any way.

    Thanks

    Have you tried Glucosamine?

I had a lot of hip trouble (not arthritic I hope!) up until I started taking it about 4 months ago. Now I have no problems.

This is something you should be talking to your doctor about imo. I understand the desire to run a marathon while you're able, but if the risks of doing so are too great then it doesn't make sense. There are other challenges out there which may be more suitable... I know people taking glucosamine and it has helped them, but like rigal they're not taking it for arthritis just more general injuries or pains...

    Thanks for the replies.

Rigal, I started taking glucosamine last month. Probably too early for results just yet.

Xebec, I won't ask my doctor because i know what his answer would be (I know you might say theres my answer in itself!)

To be honest I've been running the last few months. Some days I feel fine, other days sore. The pain when sore wouldn't be crippling but best described as nagging. I suppose what I'm really trying to figure out is what aches and pains are from starting a running plan and what are being caused by the hip.

    Thanks again

I am going out today to get those glucsamine and cod liver oil tabs ,i am not expecting a cure over night but i do need somthing to help the body and joints the hardship i am putting it through at the moment.
I have a problem with my ankle, i suspect stress fracture from my weight so i am going on the bike for 6 weeks and the tabs to help and i will report back and see how i am going.

If you suspect a stress fracture get it x-rayed. Stress fractures require you to be on crutches and putting no weight on the joint also so biking may be a bad idea.

Thankfully I've never had a stress fracture but you really need to get it looked at.

I agree. I think you really need to get it seen to.
I'm going to start taking chondroitin now as well as glucosamine.See how it goes.

Having read this thread a while back, I started on the supplements and have been taking as follows every day:

    - Cod Liver Oil (Boots variety - a "one a day" tablet)
    - Multivitamin tablet (Boots variety - a "one a day" tablet)
    - Udo's Choice (two capsules per day)
    - Glucosamine Sulphate (Kelkin brand, two tablets per day)

Ran out of my Glucosamine Sulphate at the weekend, and yesterday bought a batch of 1000mg Chondroitin/Glucosamine in Holland & Barrett (who currently have it reduced from €30 to €20 for 120 tablets), and started taking these yesterday.

Will probably drop the Multivitamin in about a month and temporarily switch to Pharmaton for the few weeks before the marathon.

Have to say, am feeling great at the moment, so the supplements definitely having an impact. Just wondering if I'm taking stuff unnecessarily. Will probably consult with a pharmacist I know, but how does the above stack up against what others are doing?

Also, is anyone else taking this Udo's Choice stuff? Any opinions?

I take glucosamine and chondritin and one a day garlic tablet every day. I was thinking of starting to take a one a day cod liver oil capsule too and a multivitamin for the next couple of months as the mileage ramps up and for a couple of months after the marathon.

I don't know much about udos oil so I can't comment.

    Hi,

I take the Udos Flax seed oil. I am not sure if it is of much help in terms of helping with joints etc but I usually take a tablespoon of it every day mixed in with pasta or rice for my dinner and the taste has actually grown on me.
