Do you think Irish people are funny?

Listening to Newstalk alot, because of the amount of driving i do, and i notice alot of humorous replies via text to certain items being discussed. Ive lived in the US, france and UK and dont find the same type or level of humor.

Here on boards, particularly in AH, both members and moderators have their moments of wit intertwined with sarcasm that can make some rather banal threads interesting to read.

Some members have become well known for their wit, such as Terry, pighead, sherifu, Hagar, Karoma (when hes not ovulating)Kickoutthejams Mirror.. and many many more..

So what is it about Irish People that enable us to have this sence of humor.. or am i just imagining it?

Yore ma, yore ma, yore ma, yore ma, yore ma, yer aul wan, yer mamma, yer da's funbag.

Now that ive used up the alloted number of tolerable "yore ma's" and variants of, for an AH thread. Please...Do not use

I think the Irish sense of humour is great, that being said yore ma is just something that's said here, its like atari jaguar. :D

If we'd always been a strong, wealthy country I think that may have had an adverse effect on our humour. Tragic comedy, as longshanks said...then again, I could be talking sh'te

I have noticed we take a light hearted approach to things. I'm a member of a certain popular motorbike forum based in Ireland and it has members from all over the world who just log on for the banter.

I've signed up to a few others in the UK and the USA and they're unreal stuffy of full of posturing and making sure everyone knows who's very important in themselves.

That's not tolerated in Ireland. You think you're the sh1t and you'll have people falling over themselves to put you back in your box unless you really are the absolute last word in your field.

The British aren't as bad as the Americans for it but their box putting back in technique is a little more reserved and cautious than ours.

Good use of the 4k post mr. snyper.

You'd have to have a good sense of humour to live in Athlone.

Interestingly the woman that gave birth to you seems not to have a problem with, after our night of unadulterated - no holds barred (literally)night of passion as i send her back home on the bus out of town with some money for the ticket and a handful of anal pain killers.

If we are a nation of funny people, why does RTE produce the most cringeworthy unfunny shite that they somehow think is comedy?

STEW, Makin' Jake, The Roaring Fcuking Twenties - they were all worse than the Holocaust

Politics - What makes it to the telleh is usually selected based on several factors not just because it's funny.

To answer the OP's question: it's a case-by-case basis, as with everything. Generally, accepting a silly generalisation, yes. We're funny. It's all relative.
Some of us fail so much (trying too damn hard is usually the main reason, or else it's the one-trick-pony-show thing). I'll post examples if you like, but I doubt you'll like them.

    Something to do with Lolocaust?
I googled lolomovie and it asked "Did You Mean loadmovie?" (which sounds verrry dodgy...)

This was the only result for lolomovie:

    http://www.unregisteredlookup.com/refunded_domains/2007/june/26/com/com_june_26_2007_591.php

.......doesn't look particularly witty to me.

I think the likes of people who come onto such threads and try to subtley prove their wit are not funny. Try hards yes, but must try harder.

In general, Irish people can be funny, the regular down to earth Joe Soaps. Otherwise no.

Also, I don't like the way Irish people talk about how funny they are, or think they are.

It's all part of the 'lets find somthing irish to moan about '.Even if x y and z are hillariously funny some will not bring themselffs to admit it .The idea of saying so frightens them but begrudgery not strictly an irish trait either :D

do we perhaps think we're funnier than other nations because we grew up with the irish sense of humour and are used to it??!!

Agreed. Seems like a bunch of fools replied in order to seem, or try to be funny. That would negate any natural humour that exists because you're trying to be funny.

You didn't mention me in your original post Snyper. You have soiled this thread.

Yeah the Irish folk have a great sense of humour. Having lived in England and been regularly in the company of English people they thought I was hilarious. I am no more funny than the next Irish guy but I would say things that I didn't even intend to be funny and they thought it was great!!

We have the crappest stand up comedians in the world IMO, they are fuking sh1te. Our general population is bloody gas though, funniest in the world as long as they dont have a stick stuck up their ass.

A bit hit and miss IMO. Good sometimes, sh1te other times. He is a good comic/sitcom actor though. One of the best. Remember that Byrne tosser on the Cassidy's? That was the worst show ever and his acting was muck!

irish people are funny because unlike onther countries we can have the craic, and a slag and take things with a pinch of salt!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 668 ✭✭✭mise_me_fein

I dunno whether it's to do with our history or what but we are funny, well another way of putting it is we are good storytellers.

If you listen to the regular American or Brit telling stories, a lot of the time it's soooooooo boring.

    Dylan Moran FTW...

Oh God, whats the weather like?? WAIT, don't tell me, I can't bare to hear, I'll look myself....*peaks out curtains*..AAAHHH Its fierce mild...

Also I think Irish people in general are funnier than anywhere else i've been, the English don't have one that I could see tbh, the American sense of humour in general isn't all that subtle and the Germans, well...

yeah, Irish people are funny. I know some of my Swedish and Danish friends are shocked when they get together with myself and a few Irish people as we spend the night pretty much continuously slagging each other off and ourselves trying to get a laugh. In Denmark and Sweden they would never insult each other for the sake of a joke but in Ireland it's kind of expected to get the craic going and loosen up the mood

I guess it comes from the over confidence and arrogance that Irish males portray when in a group, which leads the person to being more thick skinned to insults as their own self image is secure enough to not let it affect them.

Much like the "yor ma" jokes on these forums, I know my Danish friends would never even contemplate slagging off someone elses mother to get a laugh.

People here are devoid of any originality in their postings. The same old **** like +1, tbh, qft, yore ma.
