Advice needed regarding period of notice and probation

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can advise me on the following?

I am 9 months into a new job and it has turned out that I feel I'm not suited to this job and want to leave.

Problem is my contract, when I started, included a probation period of 6 months. I have not heard anything about this period since I started. I have never being told it was being extended or that I have being made permanent. I am presuming it is just an over sight on my employers behalf.
Also in my contract is a three months notice period. My dilemma now is that I want to move on from this job but feel I am best off staying until I have a year done. This means I have to hand in my notice this month. However if I hand it in while still on probation can I be told to leave before the three months? This would be not be ideal as my CV would look incomplete, I need to find another job etc.

Would I be better off asking my boss about my probation period and seeing if I will be made permanent and then had in my three months notice? Or just hand in my notice now and hope they won't get rid of me before the three months? I work for a large American pharmaceutical company.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Your employer doesn't have to do anything to make you permanent. You passed the 6 month probation period so you are automatically permanent.

    Give your three months notice.

3 months notice is a bit much - I had that in my last place. It's quite hard to plan moving on. If you hand in your notice now and start looking, then the longer you go before you find a job, the more likely you are to jump at the first opportunity that comes along. If you decide to look while continuing to work, then you have the situation of telling a potential employer that you can't start for 3 months.

Today is the end of my 6 month probationary period in my current company, and I've not heard a thing. There isn't always a formal process in place.
Or just hand in my notice now and hope they won't get rid of me before the three months?

If they do decide to waive the notice period, then you are entitled to full pay for the three months, so it's not all bad.

However, what I would do is quietly hunt around for a new job, and if you are asked about the notice period, try and convince them that you can negotiate down to 4-6 weeks upon resignation.
