can someone recommend a book detailing the rules of composition of photographs?

I know perhaps 7-8 of them ,but i believe there are far more. i heard someone somewher saying not knowing all the rules and trying to take a picture, is like only knowing half the alphabet and trying to write a novel.

I need a book with good examples of the rules in action.

    Thanks for any recommendations.

Aside from the "rule of thirds" .... which is just a guideline anyway .... I think most of it is down to personal choice.

Of course, you can always Google "photography rules" and come up with loads of sites, with examples.

I picked up this one from chapters the other week

    'Photographers Eye' by michael freeman.

Havent got round to reading it properly yet (darn masters course!) but at a glance its got what you're looking for. It also got some good reviews.

I bought the Photographer's Eye too.

It's really interesting stuff with good examples, I think I'm almost half way through.

If you were 1/3 or 2/3 the way though that would be much more visually appealing.

I am researching the "rules" at the moment, as I have togive a talk on that later this year.

My conclusion is, as was my suspicion before, that they should not be called rules at all but rather guidelines.

"Consulting the rules of composition before taking a photograph, is like consulting the laws of gravity before going for a walk."
    - Edward Weston

"The so-called rules of photographic composition are, in my opinion, invalid, irrelevant and immaterial"
    - Ansel Adams

This is quite a good site.

Well, I'm not sure they'd feel any differently about it than heterosexuals, to be honest - but you never know.
