    HI Folks,

I'm away in Asia for a year and was watching DVD's on laptop to find it only has 4 more times until it picks a permenent region setting. Is there anyway around this as I dont want it stuck on Australian region, region 4 I think it was?????

    thanks

Your DVD drive might have firmware to make it region free or you could use VLC which ignores the region setting as far as I know.

Check www.rpc1.org and see if you drive is listed.
Might have a region free firmware for download. (Use at your own risk)

(Not sure if this violates any forum rules?)

any dvd software also does the trick. it will allow any region play using any media player as normal.

    ^^
Not true. Cyberlink PowerDVD & WinDVD are two that obey the change count on the dvd drive.

Another option is to use Slysoft's AnyDVD. It decrypts the dvd on the fly via software. Not free mind.

I could be wrong, but I don't think VLC ignores region.

I totally vouch for the VLC Media Player. Very lightweight piece of software, and yes it ignores DVD region settings; I have a mixed collection of Region 1 and 2s - I cant live without it.
