    Hi.
    I'm thinking of getting an internal hard drive.
    Will either SATA or ATA/IDE internal hard drives work with a laptop (once they are 2.5' drives)?

    Also what makes of internal hard drive are recommended- Seagate, Hitachi, Samsung, Maxtor etc?

    And will a 7200rpm drive work with ANY laptop.

    Thanks.
    Any advice much appreciated.

    No, the interface connection is different for the two drive types so you'll need to get whatever kind your laptop takes. A 7200rpm disk will work fine but in theory there might be some additional draw on the battery and maybe additional heat produced.

    I would always warn away from Maxtor drives as ive had a heap of em fail on me in the past, but thats just my own opinion. I would recommend Seagate\Hitachi or Western Digital

    SATA
    =====

    1) Faster than ATA
    2) Comes in 7200RPM
    3) Different type of connector to the motherboard

    ATA/IDE/PATA
    ==========

    1) Slower than SATA
    2) Comes in 5400 RPM
    3) Different type of connector to the motherboard

    Caution: If you are upgrading ibook, then ATA , 2.5'' is needed. Thickness of the hard disk is usually same, but some are bit thicker than usual( unusually, read it somewhere). if in case you are upgarding your ibook(G4) HDD.

    Please update me, If I am wrong in any above mentioned points.

    HDD preference(personally):

    1) Seagate/Barracuda
    2) Western digital
    3) Samsung
    4) Fijitsu
    5) Others

    Cheers

    OK thanks lads.
    So what's the easiest way of finding out if my laptop takes SATA or ATA?

    Check the manufacturers website, or Google the laptop specs. Alternatively, the hard disk should be easily accessible underneath the laptop. Usually it's held behind a small cover, about 8x11cm, that can be removed easily enough. Once you open it, you can see if it's an IDE or SATA connection. Wikipedia of Google for images of what each looks like, if you don't already know.
