Stand-by flights to Bangkok

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone has ever waited in dublin airport for a stand-by flight to Bangkok - if they even do these anymore!!!

I'm hoping to go for 4 weeks, but due to difficulties getting a new passport for my bf, (they lost his applications etc...) we've been waiting 6 weeks for his new one, which should be arriving any day now, and I'm too afraid to book a flight until he gets the passport back into his hands!!

Looking online, it's working out pricey enough to book a flight departing in the next week or so, and we're pretty flexible with dates, so would it be worth waiting in the airport for a flight, or would that work out even more expensive and be too much of a gamble?

If anyone has any experience with this, please share, I don't have a clue what to do!!

    Thanks

Search this forum for stand-by - the simple answer is that stand-by doesn't really happen for non-airline staff. You're most likely just going to have to book and take the hit.

No flights from Dublin direct to Bangkok ...

Off the top of my head there are routes via Amsterdam, Abu Dhabi, London, Frankfurt, Paris with various different airlines.

On the standby note it really depends on the airline, their policies, the flight loads and your luck.

There are no direct flights to Bangkok from Dublin. Please also remember that you won't be issued with a visa on entering the country unless you have proof of a return flight so it's important to bear that in mind too, otherwise immigration will send you out of the country on the first departing flight.

On another note you should think about going via London and Colombo with Sri Lankan Airlines, by far one of the cheapest options. Also try www.deckchair.co.uk which normally offers pretty competitive last minute deals.

Ok, thanks guys for the info, was just wondering if anyone had any experiences of doing stand-by. If we went down that route, I'd book a return flight before we wnet,so that would eliminate the visa hassle.
I'm usually good for bookin flights early, but this passport issue has really thrown me, so I'll probably just have to book a v.expensive flight anyway! or if anyone has any other suggestions/reccomendations, let me know! thanks!

I know that's the official stance but I certainly wasn't asked for proof of a return flight and I wasn't even flying back from Thailand. This gets asked a lot on the student etc. travel board and it seems like most people don't have any problems. I know what you're saying but I think it's worth the risk if the alternative (ie changing your flights) is very expensive.
