Some shots from Codes on Saturday. First gig shots, so any tips or hints would be appreciated. Think I might have set the ISO too high, at 1600, on a 350d its a bit grainer than I would have liked. More on flicker.com/stevenolan for those interested.

love no.2, slight highlight blowout on face, but amazing colors and great capture, like no.1 too, ever tried noise ninja?

Really nice, dont worry about the grain it adds to them.

I like two aswell, espically the guitar under the keyboard. I have about 10 others on flickr, feel free to comment there. I had problems with getting a shot of the drummer, the stage in the academy is huge. Pity longer lenses in f1.8 or f2 are so freaking expensive.

an 85mm f1.8 would probably do you, what did you use for these?

A 50 f1.8, tried mt kit lens, which is borked, but just not good enough, mind you it is a 4.5, so i was prob expecting a bit much...

How much would an 85 mm run?

Really like the colours of the second one,

Second the recommendation for the 85mm 1.8, tis a lovely lens.

I call it my drummer lens, long enough and fast enough to get a decent drummer shot in most dublin venues.

I was at the codes gig too, (i was shooting with 2 bodies) if you see me at another gig say hello and take the 85mm for a spin.

i got mine for 350 from germany about 2 years ago, on ebay you shoudl get it for under 300
    albert has it here

like others number 2 , is my favorite , thought that was Bobby Gillespie in number 1 :p

My only tip , as a novice myself, is shutter speed of 200 .

Went to a Moroccon concert , where i was the only non muslim it seamed , that was an experience , with no pass .

I like #3, you get to see the fuller picture and love the venues logo in the back.
Reminds me of the Marquee from the 70/80's ;p

    Thanks everyone.

King Eric, I saw you there, I was leaning on the bar before the gig muttering under my breath about wanting your lenses. What gear did you have with you? You freelance or published.

My problem is even spending 300 is huge money for me at the min, it is just a hobby, and it took all my spare pennies to get the 350D. AnimalRights will know how tight I am for lens cash :). But I do really like the 50.

It was a great gig to photograph, glad I got the chance. Don't know if I'd bring stuff to ****** though.... Plus the 50 really wont cut it at Rage from the back row.

50mm would be perfect them, even a wider angle might be better, 85mm would be over kill

i was using 2 30d's with a 24-70 and 70-200, i was in a lazy mood and didnt switch to anything else, the *place we were* is fairly bright especialy when the strobes kick off so i was happy with 2.8

i had the 85mm with me, in the bag just in case, i find it a much more useful lens than the 70-200, i lusted after the 70-200 for ages, its the must have lens for lots of things but i havnt gotten the use out of it i'd hoped to get.
for what it cost, it sits in my bag way too much, just hurting my back :)

Hi Steven, I'm being nosey here! I really like the first pic, and I'm just wondering you mentioned your ISO and f stops but they are quite good shots, did you take them in full manual or in aperature mode?

I have a huge tendancy to stick with the shutter mode myself and often find light a problem and I've been hmming and hawing about going full manual, thus the reason for the question, I know cheeky!:D:D:D

Yeah Eric, they are fairly impressive cameras all together.

And smelltheglove, I reset the ISO in the menu, and then set the ap to 1.8 and just let the camera sort out the shutter speed. I know it was a slightly lazy way, but wanted sharpness, and as Eric said, the light in the academy kept changing. Think I had the right approach.

Some day I hope to be confident, or assured enough to go full auto, but still a little worried about losing that great shot because I set something wrong.
