Sore Joints

    Hi,

So around September I started running after years of non fitness, although I walk a lot to and from work but definitley not what you'd call fit. I was running about 3km starting off, about 3 times a week. Was fine for a few weeks until one evening I went to run and my joints were killing me. I could feel evey step of the run in my knees and hips, I had to stop and gave it a rest for a while.

I started again a few months ago, same distance but only about twice a week, all fine until one evening the same again. So that was 2wks ago, I went again this evening and all was fine.
Anybody any idea ? Maybe I was overdoing it ? Maybe it's from running on a pavement ?

    Cheers

Glucosamine's helped my joints a fair bit too and I've been taking Seven Sea's Joint care for a couple of months and I've seen some improvement. I've been running for about 8 years now and my knees and ankles hurt a fair bit. Since taking this stuff it's not as bad, but I wish I'd been taking them a few years ago.

Running on grass also helped with the aches when they were really bad-but that meant running on a flat football pitch in circles for an hour or more. Running can be boring enough, so that wasn't really a solution!

Make sure ya warm up properly and get your joints nice and loose too!

I find that sometimes when getting back into running, if you go too often / long at the beginning, especially if running on roads, the joints can get soar from the pounding they take. Start off slow and build from there, your legs should get used to it then (provising there's no underlying issue). Make sure you have very good running shoes too. If it still remains soar, then consider things like your mechanics of running - for example, a lot of people over pronate and hence can throw the angle of their knee and hip joint out of place etc. You'd prob need a physio to go through this with you though. But see how you get on first after a couple of weeks. They do say 50% of running should be done on grass, although I hardly ever follow this rule myself and I have bad knees!

Glucoseamine Sulp. Chondroitin complex seems to be the most successful reported joint supplements in the pharma literature. Though proper gait analysis with a physio and see what you're doing wrong and if orthotics might be the answer! worked for me.

    In no particular order:

    -Run on grass
    -Strengthen the knees and hips
    -Get good runners
    -Build up slow
-Stretch the tight muscles after use
    -Warm up properly
-Go to a good running shop and get a gait analysis, this will affect your shoe choice.
-Mix up routes, times distances. Uphill is a little easier on the joints, but harder on the CV. Some runs should be shorter than others.
-Glucosamine Sulphate is good, as is Devils Claw, however neither will be of anyuse if your muscle structure is neither strong enough or mobile enough to cope with the impact of running.

There is no harm in doing shorter runs to start and build up to 3km's, or doing a 3km and 1 or 2 shorter runs. Take your time and build up slowly.

    All the best
