I wanted to buy a poster on ebay. I saw it available for £1.50, and postage was an extra £1.50. So I scrolled down to the payment section, there was the box with all the payment methods, it said Paypal accepted. So I bought it and sent the paypal payment. The seller did not accept my paypa payment and wrote back saying: "As I said in the

listing, I don't accept paypal. You can pay by cheque or cash at your own risk." So I went back, and although the box said paypal accepted, down at the very end of the page under all the other information he has written in small font, "btw I don't have a paypal account so don't send any paypal payments."

I wrote back and reminded him that the box said paypal accepted, and so I hadn't needed to scroll down to the end and so hadn't seen it. He said that he has to have "paypal accepted" in the list of payments, ebay won't let him remove it. I said that he should have written his comment about not accepting paypal in the item description, or at least somewhere where it would be sure to be seen.

I explained that I do not have a cheque book and am not prepared to send cash as post sometimes goes missing. He said I could send a postal order but I explained that I live miles from a post office and don't drive, hence why I had checked to see that the box said paypal accepted. I suggested that we forget about the transaction if he doesn't accept paypal.

If he files a dispute, do you think I'll lose? I would gladly pay, I just can't do so any other way than paypal. If I lose, what happens? Will ebay make me pay somehow? Do you think the seller will be bothered so much over £3? If I lose a dispute will I be kicked off ebay? I haven't been in trouble with ebay before.

Do you have to have a paypal account to use ebay? Also the name he wants the cheque made out to is Mr Fry, but the name on the account and email address is Helen. That may mean nothing of course, perhaps it's his wife's or mother's account that he shares, but I guess it is a bit weird that he doesn't have paypal.

just ignore it until a dispute is raised or your action is called for...

the seller should let you away with it or risk bad fedback, If it was me i'd allow you to cancel...

Grab some screenshots of the page and stash them away for future reference. Then politely ask to cancel the transaction.

BTW: moved to Online buying and auctions.

He's talking rubbish, OP - the paypal icon only comes up if you have selected Paypal as a payment method when you are listing the auction.

He's either a fool or a scammer. Either way, you don't want to be sending any money to him. If he wants his listing fees refunded, he'll have to get you to agree to not go through with the auction. This will not effect your account in any way. If you hear nothing more, just leave it go. If anything, he's at fault for putting Paypal as an option when he doesn't take Paypal, so you've nothing to worry about.

Well, the seller just sent me an email saying, "The item description was not unclear, you should make sure you read the whole page. I would have written it in the item description but ebay wouldn't let me do that either. "

Which I know is rubbish, you can write it in the description if you want. He then sent me a request to cancel the transaction though so it's ok.

On the UK site, all sellers are now required to accept PayPal as a payment method. PayPal is automatically selected and sellers can't change this. Some sellers are trying to get around this by adding a note saying they don't accept PP (which is against policy).

If I were you, I would neg the seller and move on.

The seller is threatening me now! I mailed him to point out that you can write it in the item description and you can choose not to select paypal. He mailed back to say you can't, sellers must offer paypal as a choice. So I said, well then you're breaking the rules by not accepting paypal. He wrote back angrily yo say, "I don't trsust paypal which is why I don't accept this and I'm not arguing any more, if you contact me again I'll report you to ebay."
I was so annoyed I wrote back anyway and said, "In other words you know you're breaking the rules by not accepting paypal, your outfit sounds dodgy as you want the cheque sent to someone who has a different name than that on the ebay account. If you report me, I'll report you for breaking the rules and threatening me, and I'll leave you bad feedback."

Why not just report him to ebay anyway. Paying by cheque is very dodgy and rights are lost big time. He has nothing to report you on.

At the end of the day - sellers are not able to leave negative feedback for buyers anymore...ignore him and move on...

Email "wars" like this just go back and forth and they're a waste of time. Neg and move on. If he replies to your neg, you can leave a follow up comment to that and you'll have the last word. If he leaves a positive feedback with a negative comment, you can get this removed.

Report him for seller non-performance. He is breaking the rules by not accepting Paypal, and not making this obvious in the auction leads to confusion. If eBay investigate, and see that none of his auctions actually accept Paypal, when it's required, they'll remove them all, and possibly suspend his account. Then negative feedback him. He can't do much about this, so why not.

Keep any Paypal emails you have, showing you tried to Pay, but the seller refused it. Send the email conversation you had with the seller, including ALL headers, to eBay with your complaint.

Only give Negative feedback as a last resort...

It takes us powersellers a lot of hard work to get 100% positive feedback......and to loose your status over a €3 item is a severe kick in the teeth and can take 6mts + to recover from......

Reputation is everything on ebay....only use negative if your left with no other choice!!!!!

Sell more and buy less and you'll know what I mean;)

I wholeheartedly agree but this seller doesn't seem like a PowerSeller and from what StormWarrior has said, he sounds like he thoroughly deserves a neg.

Only leave negative feedback when it is warranted, is what I do.

True, but a reputable seller wouldn't be offering a payment type that he doesn't accept. This is the work of a shyster.

I've bought from plenty of sellers with less that 100% positive rating. I use eBay Negs to check the details of the sellers negative comments. Sometimes, they can be unwarranted, but not always.

He's not a powerseller. I asked him to stop writing to me but he carried on sending me emails telling me I don't know what I'm talking about and telling me to "get over it." So I left him neg, reported him and he is still sending me emails! It's very annoying.

As mentioned before, just don't reply to his emails. It only prolongs the situation. You can report abusive emails by going to:

Help > Contact Us > Account Security > Unwanted or inappropriate email > User sent you an offensive email... > Continue > Email us

You need to make sure you have the header of the email. Every email programme is a little different as to how you extract the headers of an email. You may need to consult the help section of your email account/programme to find out how to get the headers.
